Swim Kaua‘i Aquatics coach Billy Brown is returning to the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center with two swimmers — Anya Littlefield, 17, and Yasmine Ware, 14.
Brown swam his first Junior National meet at the same pool in 1996. This week, he returns as the coach for two of Kaua‘i’s young standouts at the 2011 Western Region Short Course Section Championship.
“I’m very proud to be bringing these girls to the Mainland to compete against the best swimmers in the Western Section,” Brown said in a release.
The meet is classified as a “senior meet” where the swimmers are not divided by age groups. Instead, all swimmers between 13 and 18 years old go head-to-head.
During the meet, Littlefield will be swimming four events — the 200 Yard Freestyle, 1000 Yard Freestyle, 1650 Yard Freestyle, and the 200 Yard Butterfly.
Ware will be swimming in two events — the 50 Yard Freestyle and the 100 Yard Backstroke.
In addition to these events, the SKA girls qualified with teammates Sophie Britzmann and Kate Machorek for the 200 Yard and 400 Yard Freestyle Relay.
However, Britzmann and Machorek will not be attending the meet, and Littlefield and Ware will be supporting the 20 other Hawai‘i swimmers from around the state who will be attending the meet.
“These types of highly competitive meets are crucial to the development of top-level swimmers,” said Dan Britzmann, president of SKA, in the release. “SKA is very proud of these girls and how well they represent Kaua‘i, and Hawai‘i, on the big stage.”
The Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Seattle, Wash., was the site of the 1990 Goodwill Games, the 1991, 1994, 1997, 2000, 2006 USA Swimming Nationals, 2008 NCAA Men’s Division I championships, 2009 U.S. Open, 2009 Junior Nationals, and 2009 USA Swimming Short Course Nationals.
