Island School split its Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation tennis opener with Waimea High School, Wednesday afternoon at the Kaua‘i Community College courts.
Island School was a 3-2 winner In the boys matches, but the Lady Menehune had a 3-2 edge in the girls matches.
The Wednesday match was rescheduled from Saturday after passing rains forced the postponement despite players having been on the court warming up.
Ernie Blachowiak, coach of the Island School program, said Wednesday was the only day the KCC courts were available, so the matches began at 3 p.m.
Sam Dunham defeated Waimea’s Joshua Ponting, 6-0, 6-1 for the No. 1 Boys Singles, and Ryan Perez added to it with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Andrew Dutton in the No. 2 Boys Singles.
Island School’s third win came in the Boys No. 1 Doubles where Jeremy Randolph-Flagg teamed with Logan Domingo to defeat Waimea’s Bryle Rivera and Bradley Cano, 6-3, 6-2.
Waimea boys took the No. 2 and No. 3 Boys Doubles.
John Gawaran teamed with John Villanueva to defeat the Voyager No. 2 Doubles team of Ben Steuri and Dylan Morrison-Fogel, 6-3, 6-2, and Mark Razalan and Chris Ajimura took the No. 3 Boys Doubles over Adain Dungan and Keoni Bomer, 6-3, 6-1.
Waimea’s Lani-Rae Green, coming off a strong showing in the recent Kaua‘i Charity Doubles tournament, got past Madison Duarte, 6-4, 6-3, in Girls No. 1 Singles. Duarte also participated in the Charity Doubles tournament as a prelude to the KIF season.
Waimea’s Brittney Varreira defeated April Oo, 6-2, 6-0 for the Girls No. 2 Singles.
Waimea’s Dessa Rentrop and Annalissa Hartsell defeated Megan Perius and Haley Uliana, 6-3, 6-3 for the Girls No. 1 Doubles.
Island School took the No. 2 and No. 3 Girls Doubles with a back-and-forth win in the Second Doubles match, as Stephanie Steuri teamed with Tessa Mason to get past the Waimea duo of Brittney Palencia and Shantel Rita, 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-4).
Island School’s Lauren Spears and Michaela Sullivan teamed to defeat the Menehune pair of Chantelle Carveiro and Mary Yasay, 6-0, 6-1.
Waimea will host Kapa‘a at the Hanapepe tennis courts, Saturday starting at 10 a.m. while Island School will travel to the Kaua‘i Lagoons courts against Kaua‘i High School, also starting at 10 a.m.
