Island School senior Brennan Wortmann was announced as the third-place winner of the 2011 Congressional Art Competition, “Kaha Ki‘i: An Artistic Discovery,” Saturday in Honolulu.
For his achievement, Wortmann will receive $250 and his piece titled “Ahukuni” will be displayed in Congresswoman Mazie Hirono’s Honolulu office for one year, states a release from Hirono’s office.
A pair of Leilehuha High School juniors won first and second place, respectively.
Brennan Leong was announced the grand prize winner for his work titled “Fish,” and his winning piece representing Hawai‘i’s 2nd Congressional District will be displayed in Washington, D.C. Leong also received $500.
As the representative of the 2nd Congressional District, which represents rural O‘ahu and the Neighbor Islands, Leong’s “Fish” will be displayed along a highly visited corridor leading to the U.S. Capitol Building alongside winning pieces of art representing congressional districts across the country, starting in June.
Veronica Vestal finished the competition in second place for her piece titled “Looking Glass,” and will receive $300. Her “Looking Glass” piece will be displayed in Hirono’s office in Washington, D.C.
There were 89 students from Kaua‘i, Maui, Molokai, O‘ahu and Hawai‘i entered in this year’s contest.
Vince Hazen, Alison Ibara-Kawabe and Lori Uyehara served as the judges.
