LIHU‘E — Chuck Brady of the Kaua‘i Marriott Resort was not the only winner, Friday morning.
Brady, who accepted a congratulatory sundae from Doug Sears, general manager of the Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort and Spa, had his daughter named top speller at the Kaua‘i Complex Area Spelling Bee, Thursday night, was joined by Scott Giarman and Lynnette Medrano-Stine of the Kaua‘i United Way.
Sears and Frank Guarin of the Sheraton Kaua‘i were making good on a wager between the two South Shore resort properties and two Eastside properties, the Kaua‘i Marriott and the Kaua‘i Beach Resort.
“The wager was to see who could raise the most in a final push for the Kaua‘i United Way 2010 Campaign,” Giarman said. “Apparently, the East won, so the losers are making good and coming to serve ice cream to the associates of both Eastside properties.”
That friendly wager pushed the total of the Kaua‘i United Way 2010 Campaign to a grand total of $598,326, or about 96.5 percent of its goal of $620,000, Medrano-Stine said.
“At one point, we were hoping that we would be able to make 95 percent of the goal which was raised from last year,” Giarman said. “We did better, thanks to these resorts and their friendly wager. We finished at more than 96 percent of goal.”
Giarman noted that last year, the goal was $615,000 and the 2009 Campaign finished at 95.1 percent of goal.
He said contributing to the Kaua‘i United Way is a great way to help the island because just one contribution helps all of the people of Kaua‘i, and the money raised on Kaua‘i stays on Kaua‘i.
The spirit of giving continued at the Kaua‘i Beach Resort where property manager Robin Graf spiced up the sundaes with giveaways to the associates, including envelopes containing tickets to the East Kaua‘i Lions Club pancake breakfast coming up Sunday at Elsie Wilcox Elementary School cafeteria.
