WAILUA — Built by hundreds of volunteers in 2004 and destroyed by fire four years ago, the Kamalani Pavilion is now undergoing reconstruction.
Kaua‘i Builders was awarded a $227,756 contact for the project and is expected to complete the work by the end of August, a county news release states.
The new pavilion will be 1,050 square feet, slightly largely than the original structure, and will be built with an ADA compliant concrete foundation, hollow tile walls and a wooden roof.
Ceramic murals created by students from 23 schools and youth groups around the island with assistance from the Van Go! team of local artists will adorn the interior of the new pavilion. The art project is being coordinated by the Garden Island Arts Council with donations from many community organizations and individuals.
Local architect Avery Youn designed the new pavilion pro bono.
The Kamalani Pavilion is part of the Lydgate Park master plan, which was developed in 1999 by the Friends of Kamalani and Lydgate Park.
The plan also includes: additional picnic and day use areas; a segment of Ke Ala Hele Makalae, the county’s 16-mile multi-use coastal path; campgrounds; the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg sports fields; as well as the Kamalani Playground and Kamalani Kai Bridge.
