KALALAU — A 68-year-old male visitor from Oren, Utah, was airlifted from the Kalalau Trail Monday afternoon after sustaining injuries, a county news release states.
The Utah resident had been hiking near Hanakoa Valley at approximately 10 a.m. when he hurt his right ankle.
At approximately 1:06 p.m., another hiker in the area walked out to the trailhead and notified Ke‘e Beach lifeguards about the situation.
In turn, the lifeguards contacted Police Dispatch, the release states.
Rescue 3 and Air 1 responded to the call and flew over the trail looking for the Utah man based on the information that was reported.
After locating who they thought was the injured hiker roughly four miles in from the trailhead, Rescue 3 and Air 1 flew to a nearby landing zone, the release states.
From there they walked to the hiker, put him in an air rescue vest and short hauled him back to the landing zone.
The Utah man was then placed in the back of Air 1 and flown Princeville Airport, where awaiting medics then transported him to Wilcox Memorial Hospital for treatment.
