LIHU‘E — The shipment of Girl Scout cookies are in and people who pre-ordered the once-a-year treats should be getting their deliveries shortly.
Tricia Yamashita, Director of Community Development for the Girl Scouts, said this year’s sales are up, and she brought in extras for the site sales which start next week.
Site sales for Girl Scout cookies are open to anyone who wants to get them on a first-come, first-serve basis and are located at all local supermarkets, all of the Big Save stores, the Kmart, Longs Drugs and Walmart stores, Yamashita said.
“Sales of cookies for this year has been very good,” she said. “Because of the increase in sales, we’ve ordered an extra 100 cases.”
Yamashita said there are at least a dozen girls from Kaua‘i who have sold between 700 and 2,000 boxes of cookies, qualifying them for an overnight stay on O‘ahu where they can participate in the Hall of Fame/Priceless program.
According to the Girl Scouts, Hawai‘i website, girls in the Hall of Fame have sold 1,000 or more boxes of cookies. Girls who are listed in Priceless have sold 700-plus boxes of cookies.
This year, girls in the Hall of Fame/Priceless program will be honored before their family and friends in a special ceremony at Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park. Additionally, the Hall of Fame achievers will have their photos featured in the International Room at the Girl Scout Hale in Nu‘uanu on O‘ahu, the website states.
Thin Mints, a thin chocolate-peppermint cookie coated in chocolate, leads the list of eight cookie varieties available on Kaua‘i, Yamashita said.
“Thin Mints is by far the most favorite cookie,” Yamashita said. “Last year, we introduced Thank U Berry Much and it sold out within two weeks. It returns this year, but people are encouraged to get theirs early because we anticipate it selling out early as well.”
Thank U Berry Much is a cookie made with premium cranberries and white fudge chips, which comes 14 cookies to a 6.17-ounce carton.
The Lemon Chalet Cremes, rectangular cinnamon-ginger lemon-filled cookies, are also back and join the lineup of favorites include Trefoils, Dulce de Leche, Do-Si-Dos, Tagalongs and Samoas.
Girl Scout Cookies do not contain preservatives, are all made with pure vegetable shortening, are kosher, and freeze well to extend their shelf life, the website states.
Proceeds from the sale of Girl Scout Cookies goes to support Girl Scout programs while cookie donations are sent to Hawai‘i’s troops deployed overseas through Operation: Girl Scout Cookies.
Yamashita said there are about 350 Girl Scouts enrolled on Kaua‘i spread out over approximately 25 troops.
Three coordinators — Courtney Wilson at the Elsie Wilcox Elementary School, Chelsea Doi at the King Kaumuali‘i Elementary School, and Lee Ann Yadao at the Kapa‘a Elementary School — head up an after-school program for the Girl Scouts.
