LIHU‘E — The second season officially opens today for the Warriors, with high hopes for a successful conclusion to their 2011 campaign.
Kapa‘a (11-0-0) enters the JN Automotive Group 2011 Hawai‘i State Soccer Championships as the No. 2 seed in the Division II bracket after another stellar year of KIF play.
Its journey will get underway against Konawaena (7-2-3), the third team out of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation.
The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. on Field 11 at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex.
Eight teams comprise the Div. II tournament, which will run through Saturday.
The No. 1 seed is Big Island favorite Honoka‘a (8-2-2), who will meet up with Radford (7-2-3), the second team from the O‘ahu Interscholastic Association.
St. Anthony (5-6-1), of the Maui Interscholastic League, earned the No. 4 seed and will face Mid-Pacific (2-7-1), representing the Interscholastic League of Honolulu.
Despite its record, Mid-Pac will be looking to duplicate what its girls’ team accomplished two weeks ago, when it entered the HHSAA tournament with a 3-9-0 season record and took home the Div. II state title. Playing against Div. I competition for much of its regular season, Mid-Pac will enter the bracket ready to contend for another championship.
Today’s fourth game will pit No. 3 Waipahu (7-2-4), the top seed from the OIA, and Hawai‘i Prep (6-5-2) of the BIIF.
All four games are scheduled to kick off at 3 p.m. on Fields 9-12 at the Waipio complex.
The semifinal matchups (Honoka‘a/Radford vs. St. Anthony/Mid-Pac; Kapa‘a/Konawaena vs. Waipahu/HPA) will both be played at 3 p.m. on Friday, using Fields 11 and 12.
The championship is set for 5 p.m., Saturday in the Main Stadium.
Every team is guaranteed at least two games, with today’s losers heading into the consolation bracket to play for fifth place.
The Div. I tournament got underway Wednesday and will resume with quarterfinal matches today in the Main Stadium. Matches are set to begin at 1 p.m., finishing with No. 1 Kamehameha-Kapalama’s match at 7 p.m.
The Div. I championship will follow the Div. II title match at 7 p.m., Saturday.
OC 16 will have live coverage of the Div. I semifinals on Friday and both division championship matches on Saturday.
