WAIMEA — Hofgaard Park is a popular destination for weekend motorcycle enthusiasts.
But the stop at the triangular park fronting First Hawaiian Bank and Ishihara Market on the highway side meant more on Sunday when the Waimea Town Main Street program hosted its second motorcycle show.
“The bikers are going to have brunch at Wrangler’s restaurant in the morning, and should have their rides out for the public to admire from 11 a.m.,” said Patrick McClean, the Waimea Main Street coordinator.
Admirers of the many motorcycles, some sporting customized packages of accessories and paint jobs, were also treated to weekly specials from Waimea town merchants to serve as a prelude to the week’s celebrations which started with a film festival Monday.
Harold and Paula Rosa captured the judges’ eyes with their bike and took top honors for the second straight year.
“We used independent judging to ensure fairness,” McClean said, noting this was a change from last year’s show. “Second place honors went to Danny Good, and Kaua‘i Police Department Asst. Chief Roy Asher earned third place honors.”
McClean said the mission of the Waimea Town Main Street program is to enhance the financial prosperity of Waimea Town while sustaining its unique historic and multi-cultural resources through creative economic endeavors.
The show also announced the Waimea Heritage Days series of events centering around the historic Waimea Theater leading up to the two-day Waimea Town Celebration, Friday evening and Saturday.
Merchants participating in the Mainstreet flier offer discounts as well as free gifts with any purchase and include A Hideaway Spa, Aunty Lilikoi, Da Booze Shop, Island Taco, Kaua‘i Granola, L & L Hawaiian BBQ, Lu’s Crafts, Na Pali Explorer, Sweet Lomi Massage, Camouflage Etc., and Yumi’s Restaurant.
Many of these also contributed to the success of the motorcycle show, McLean said.
Show sponsors included Makai Properties, Suzuki Kaua‘i, Kaua‘i Harley Davidson, Wrangler’s Restaurant, Kikiaola Construction, A Hideaway Spa, Aloha N Paradise, Anointed T-shirt Co., Aunty Lilikoi, Camoflauge Etc., Da Booze Shop, Island Taco, Inn Waimea, Kaua‘i Ganola, L & L Hawaiian BBQ, Lu’s Crafts, Na Pali Explorer, Sweet Lomi Massage and Yumi’s Restaurant.
“Everyone had a great time,” McClean said, despite the threat from the incoming weather front which generated a flash flood watch from the National Weather Service. “We look forward to continuing the event on the Sunday of the Presidents’ Day weekend for years to come.”
