LIHU‘E — A 14-month-old girl sitting on the driver’s lap died in a three-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon on Kaumuali‘i Highway near Dynasty Court, county officials said.
No one else involved in the wreck was hurt, officials said. The crash occurred around 2:20 p.m. on Kaumuali‘i Highway just west of the Kalepa Street junction.
All three vehicles were eastbound on the highway when the first vehicle, a county pick-up truck, came to a stop, a county news release states. The vehicle behind the truck, a PT Cruiser, also came to a stop.
Apparently unaware that traffic had come to a stop, the driver of the third vehicle, a Nissan Pathfinder, rear-ended the PT Cruiser, which caused the PT Cruiser to rear-end the truck, the release states.
There were no passengers in the pick-up truck. The PT Cruiser had one passenger, officials said.
A 28-year-old Puhi man was driving the Nissan Pathfinder, county spokeswoman Mary Daubert said. The 14-month-old girl was sitting on his lap. Her siblings — a 2-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl — were sitting in the back seat wearing their seatbelts.
Daubert said until the investigation is completed she could not confirm if the infant’s death was due to the driver’s airbag being deployed.
Kaumuali‘i Highway between Kalepa Street and Nuhou Road was closed until just after 5 p.m. while law enforcement investigated.
No arrests have been made, Daubert said.
State records show the Nissan Pathfinder is registered to Sheri Malia Cabinatan.
