LIHU‘E — A 14-month-old girl sitting on the driver’s lap died in a three-car crash this afternoon on Kaumuali‘i Highway near Dynasty Court, county officials said.
No one else involved in the wreck was injured, a news release states.
The crash occurred at approximately 2:20 p.m. on Kaumuali‘i Highway west of the Kalepa Street junction.
All three vehicles were eastbound on the highway when the first vehicle, a county pick-up truck, came to a stop, the release states. The vehicle behind the truck, a PT Cruiser, also came to a stop.
Apparently unaware that traffic had come to a stop, the driver of the third vehicle, a Nissan Pathfinder, rear-ended the PT Cruiser, which caused the PT Cruiser to rear-end the truck.
There were no passengers in the pick-up truck. The PT Cruiser had one passenger. The Nissan Pathfinder had four juvenile passengers, including the 14-month-old girl.
Kaumuali‘i Highway between Kalepa Street and Nuhou Road was reopened just after 5 p.m.
