The state Department of Health urges parents of children ages 11 and 12 to get their preteens vaccinated against serious, sometimes life-threatening diseases, including pertussis (also known as whooping cough), meningococcal, human papillomavirus, and flu infections.
According to a national study, only 1 in 3 of Hawai‘i’s adolescents is vaccinated against pertussis, which causes a prolonged and severe coughing, and half of Hawai‘i’s adolescents remain unvaccinated against meningococcal infection, which can be fatal, according to a news release.
Talk to your doctor about vaccines for your preteen and help your preteen stay healthy by making sure they receive the recommended vaccines, the release states.
