LIHU‘E — Residents and visitors now have the option of riding the Kaua‘i Bus later on weeknights.
The expanded service on bus routes around the island began Monday.
“We’re hoping that the expansion of our public transportation system will provide a viable alternative to people driving private vehicles,” said Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. in a news release. “If more people ride The Kaua‘i Bus, it will certainly alleviate traffic congestion, reduce the amount of carbon dioxide that’s released in the environment, and result in substantial savings to bus riders.”
The mayor also noted that the expanded bus service is one of 38 projects that are part of his Holo Holo 2020 vision for Kaua‘i.
Included on the list of bus routes that now offer later hours are the following: Route 100, Kekaha to Lihu‘e; Route 200, Lihu‘e to Kekaha; Route 400, Hanalei to Lihu‘e; Route 500, Lihu‘e to Hanalei; Route 30, Koloa shuttle; Route 60, Kapahi shuttle; and Route 70, Lihu‘e shuttle.
Anyone heading to Kekaha from Lihu‘e in the evening can catch a Route 200 bus, which begins at Walmart at 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30 p.m.
Those going in the opposite direction can hop on a Route 100 bus, which originates at the Elepaio Road/Akialoa Road bus stop in Kekaha at 7:30 and 8:30 p.m.
Additionally, the hours of the North Shore bus routes have also been extended, and riders now have the option of taking a Route 500 bus, which begins at Kaua‘i Community College at 7:25, 8:25 and 9:25 p.m. destined for Hanalei.
Those traveling from Hanalei to Lihu‘e can catch a Route 400 bus, which originates at the old Hanalei Courthouse at 7:15 and 8:15 p.m.
Other changes that are now in effect are extended hours for three shuttle Routes: Koloa Route 30; Kapahi Route 60; and Lihu‘e Route 70.
The Kapahi shuttle, which runs a circular route stopping at various points in Kapa‘a and Kapahi, had two buses added to its schedule, 7:33 and 9:33 p.m.
The Koloa shuttle, a circular route between Koloa, Po‘ipu and Kalaheo, also has two buses added to its schedule, 7:31 and 9:31 p.m.
The Lihu‘e shuttle, which traverses the Lihu‘e business district and the airport, has three buses added, 6:55, 7:55 and 8:55 p.m.
Bus schedules are available on all county buses and at a number of businesses around the island including Big Save, Kukui Grove Center and Safeway.
