LIHU‘E — All-Star announcements continue to roll out for the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation winter season, as the 2011 Canoe Paddling All-Stars were named, Thursday.
In an e-mail from KIF executive director, the Kapa‘a crew teams dominated the honorees, a warranted result for their success throughout the paddling season.
The Girls Crew team included three Lady Warriors, as Ciara Wainwright (junior), Tracylynne Pepe Kuhaulua (senior) and Malanie Mendoza (senior) took half the distributed All-Star spots.
Kaua‘i High School had a pair of All-Stars in seniors Melia Aki and Cierra Pablo, while Waimea High School had sophomore Sinuanua Potts on the squad. Potts is the only sophomore on any of the three All-Star teams.
The Boys Crew team had the same breakdown, with three Kapa‘a members, two from Kaua‘i and one from the Menehune.
Warrior seniors Mark Hatchell, Austin Delos Santos and Zachary Rodriguez are all honorees. The Raiders’ Dominic Armstrong (senior) and Dustin Pereira (junior) each made the team, along with Waimea junior Kelsey Hedges.
On the Mixed Crew team, four Kapa‘a and two Kaua‘i paddlers comprised the unit. Warrior seniors Kekoa Alfiler, Ashley Melendez and Weston Moniz joined with junior Michaelyn Alalem. Raiders Ashley Palacio-Ono (senior) and Joshua Ludington (junior) completed the selections.
The Kapa‘a Mixed Crew team that went to the HHSAA competition, Feb. 4 on O‘ahu, finished in fourth place on a 3:58.11 paddle.
