LIHU‘E — The Kapa‘a Warriors saw their season come to a close Friday night with a loss to St. Joseph in the consolation bracket at the Hawaiian Airlines HHSAA Boys Basketball State Championships.
Kapa‘a (10-5) fell by a 49-44 final score in a very competitive game, led by a double-double from Kainoa Colipano, who had 14 points and 10 rebounds — both Warrior highs.
Willis Batol finished the night with nine points and a team-high three steals.
Bradley Coloma, who suffered an injury in Thursday night’s quarterfinal loss, came back to score five points, including one 3-pointer.
Spam Lindsey, held scoreless Thursday, had four points and eight rebounds. Keane Agoot also scored four.
David Kanoho, Jude Cruz, Adam Clark and Keoni Kinzie had two points apiece, while Daniel Reis — also injured Thursday night — notched a team-high three assists in the game.
Thomas Fairman was the high man for St. Joseph, finishing the evening with 19 points and 14 rebounds.
Sebastian Ohara-Saft followed with 11, while William Scanlan-Leite had nine. Christian Kaui scored six and Aldyn Dalere and Dalton Kaitoku-Lucas rounded out the scoresheet with two points apiece.
The Warriors took a three-point lead after the first quarter, 12-9, but saw that advantage quickly erased in the second period. St. Joseph put up 17 in the frame and held a narrow 26-24 lead at halftime.
Kapa‘a outscored St. Joseph 11-10 in the third, going into the final eight minutes trailing 36-35.
But the Warriors were held to nine points in the fourth quarter, their lowest output of the night. It was not enough to come away with the win and continue on in the consolation bracket.
After a 43-33 loss to University in Thursday’s quarterfinals, Kapa‘a sees its season come to an end.
The Warriors arrived at the HHSAA Division II tournament as the No. 4 seed after their thrilling, double-overtime win over the Kaua‘i Red Raiders in the KIF championship game. Lindsey sent Kapa‘a to O‘ahu with a lay-up at the buzzer, giving the Warriors another league crown.
Now the Div. II title will be determined today as the top two seeds — No. 1 Farrington and No. 2 Pahoa — face off for the state title, tipping off at 5 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Farrington survived a huge test from University, which was hoping to cut down another seeded opponent. The semifinal matchup went to overtime with Farrington notching a 47-45 win.
The night’s first semifinal was a 48-39 win for Pahoa over No. 3 seed Island Pacific. Pahoa was led by Nicklas Fisher’s 14 points. Theo Duplechain scored 22 in the loss for IPA.
University and IPA will battle for third place, playing this morning at 11 a.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
St. Joseph moves on to the consolation final, hoping for fifth place. It will take on McKinley in the day’s first game at 9 a.m. at the SSC.
McKinley was a 69-52 winner of Seabury Hall, Friday night.
Division I
Top seed ‘Iolani did its part, reaching the Division I championship game with a 45-38 victory over Kahuku, Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Trevyn Tulonghari led the way with 12 points, while Josiah Sukumaran had 11 points and seven boards for the Raiders. Former Kapa‘a Warrior and KIF Player of the Year Duke Pauli had two points and a rebound for the state’s top team.
The bracket’s other half saw Kamehameha-Kapalama continue its rampage through the field with a 68-54 win over Academy of the Pacific.
Micah Christenson was a beast, finishing the game with 28 points and 19 rebounds as Kapalama jumped out to a 37-20 halftime lead and never looked back.
It has won its three tournament games by an average of just over 30 points.
The ‘Iolani-Kapalama game will complete the full slate of games today, tipping off at 7 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Kahuku and AOP will play for third place at 3 p.m.
Radford was a 63-47 winner over Lahainaluna, Friday, while Moanalua knocked off Kamehameha-Big Island, 62-56.
Those two winners will play for fifth place at 1 p.m.
Mililani was awarded the consolation championship with a 64-60 win over Roosevelt, Friday morning. Hassan Richardson had 26 points and eight rebounds for Mililani.
