PUHI — A Waimea woman broke her left arm and spent a short time in jail last week after her van knocked down the Kilohana Plantation sign on Kaumuali‘i Highway.
The Nissan Quest van wrecked at about 2:40 a.m. Friday, destroying the approximately 25-year-old wooden sign in the process.
According to a county press release, police say the crash occurred when the driver of the westbound Nissan, 33-year-old Star Kaleo Nahinahi Aguiar, attempted to overtake a pickup truck traveling ahead of her near the Nuhou Street intersection.
The van struck a concrete construction barrier on the south shoulder of the highway and then veered back across two lanes of traffic. It then hit a culvert, climbed an embankment on the north shoulder of the highway, and is believed to have rolled over once before finally crashing into the Kilohana Plantation sign. The plantation is located at 3-2087 Kaumuali‘i Highway.
No passengers were in the van at the time of the crash.
Aguiar went to the Wilcox Memorial Hospital for treatment of a broken left arm. Officers then took her to the police cell block on a charge of operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.
She posted $500 bail later that morning.
Meanwhile, on the Kilohana property,
all that remains of the crash and the sign is a jagged wooden post and a ruined patch of lawn.
