LIHU‘E — The University of Hawai‘i men’s golf team will host the John A. Burns Invitational at the Turtle Bay Resort in Kahuku, O’ahu, on the George Fazio and Arnold Palmer courses, for the first time in its 35 year history.
The three-day tournament begins Wednesday and concludes on Friday. All rounds begin at 7:30 a.m., with a shotgun start, states a release from the UH athletic department.
The tournament was previously held at the Kane’ohe Klipper Golf Course for 13 years before moving to the Leilehua Golf Course, where it was held for the past 11 years.
This year’s tournament brings together 16 teams from around the country, including four teams from Hawai‘i. The tournament also includes two teams ranked in the NCAA Division 1 Top 25, California (No. 14) and Virginia (No. 17).
As governor of the state of Hawai‘i, the late John A. Burns longed to see the growth of UH’s athletes at a competitive level with the rest of the nation. The tournament that bears his name offers UH golfers an opportunity to compete with the best in the NCAA. Former participants and individual champions include future PGA stars such as Notah Begay (1995) and Tiger Woods (1996) of Stanford and Oklahoma States’ Bo Van Pelt (1997).
Golfers will play a total of 54 holes in the three-day tournament, 18 holes each day, and compete on a par-72 course checking in at 7,218 yards on the Palmer course and 6,535 yards on the Fazio course.
Live scoring for the tournament will be available at www.golfstatresults.com.
