KALAHEO — West Kaua‘i Hornet strong forward Kamea Palama-Alquiza scored a game-high 12 points in an effort that fell short, 38-22 against Team Central 2 in the first of three Boys 13 and Under Parks and Recreation Department Winter Basketball League, Thursday.
The more experienced Papalina-Blue stayed ahead of Papalina-White throughout the night for a 54-37 win in the second of three games played at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Mosese Fifita topped the Kaua‘i Ballers scoring with 14 points as the yellowshirts stayed ahead of the Flyin’ Hawaiians throughout the night en route to a 58-38 showing in the nightcap.
Lester Acojido and Arnolfo Balaan each pocketed 10 points to lead the Team Central 2 win, followed by James Mostoles adding nine points.
Following Palama-Alquiza’s lead for the Hornets, guard Kicah Acoba dropped six points with Levi Sagucio rounding out the effort on four points.
Chavis Garma was everywhere for Papalina-Blue, finishing the night with a game-high 16 points.
Charlie Rabago, playing strong on both ends of the floor, lent 12 points to the win, followed by guard Jassem Cumlat dropping 10 points and several key blocks against his younger brother, Joseph.
Strong low post Nate Herbig topped the Papalina-White scoring on 14 points including numerous second efforts from the outside. He was joined by Daniel Fee, the other low post, adding 10 points, the outing helping him gain confidence on the floor. Noah Thompson rounded out the leaderboard with five marks.
“These boys are good boys,” said Clyde Vito, who shared coaching duties with Matt Taba. “We try to teach them more than the game of basketball. They come to practice, and if we see they can be developed as leaders, we work them into that direction, so by the time they get to high school, they should become not only good with skills, but have leadership abilities.”
Fifita set the pace for the Kaua‘i Ballers, scoring 14 marks to go with his presence in the paint. He was followed by Paul Oyama and Thomas Yam each chipping in nine points, Yam overcoming several frustrating travel moments in the opening half.
Bryden Salvador topped the Flyin’ Hawaiians with 10 points, followed by Keali‘i Colipano adding nine points and Jonah Howard pushing through for eight points.
The boys are on the floor at Kalaheo Neighborhood Center with a triple-header today starting with Papalina-White taking on Team Central 2 at 9 a.m. Team Lihu‘e Extreme takes on the Kaua‘i Ballers starting at 10 a.m. with Team Central 1 going up against the Flyin’ Hawaiians starting at 11 a.m.
They also play on Monday at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center starting at 6 p.m.
