Merrell Kaious led the Ho‘ouila balanced offense with 13 points in the yellowshirts’ 61-34 showing over the West Kaua‘i Hornets in the opener at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Matthew Cummings and Christian Roslin combined for 28 points to lead Hanakila to a 43-37 edge over a tenacious Flyin’ Hawaiians squad in the nightcap.
Westside’s Jamin Fernandes, finishing the night with high-point honors at 15, calmly moved his squad into the lead, dropping a charity pair in the final 13 seconds of play.
That broke a 39-39 deadlock set up when Kaua‘i Ballers’ Paul Oyama, finishing with high-point honors for the purples at nine marks, finished an inbound play for the stalemate at the 31-second mark.
Reymund Mendoza capped the Westside win, getting 1-for-2 at the foul line in the final three seconds.
Following Fernandes, Briggs Agu, knotting the game at 37-37 on a Kaua‘i Ballers’ turnover, finished the night with 14 points, followed by Cheyne Kua adding four marks in the win.
Following Oyama’s lead, Willo Batol, younger brother of Kapa‘a High School guard Willis Batol, tucked in seven points with Justin Poskin adding six.
Ho‘ouila, replenished with a full force following Saturday’s matches in Kilauea, capitalized on the absence of the West Kaua‘i Hornets’ low post on its run led by Merrel Kaious tallying 13 points. Melvin Tinzon finished with 11 points and Arick Yasay, strong under the boards, added 10 points in the win.
Keoni Gaoiran topped the Hornets’ scoring with 13 points, followed by Levi Sagucio adding 11 points and King Blanes finishing with six points.
Matthew Cummings, tall man for Hanakila, topped the Kilauea team’s victory with 15 points, followed by Roslin adding 13 points and Jackeson McCullough adding eight points.
Keali‘i Colipano finished with a game-high 24 points for the Flyin’ Hawaiians who did not let the Hanakila height in the paint stop its push for the net. Bradley Villanueva added eight points in the effort.
The 11-team league next takes the floor Thursday, when the West Kaua‘i Hornets open against Team Central 2 starting at 6 p.m. at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center. That game will be followed by the Papalina-White and Papalina-Blue tangling at 7 p.m. followed by the Flyin’ Hawaiians matching up with the Kaua‘i Ballers starting at 8 p.m.
