An unexpected Sunday deluge deterred us from hiking, but brought us to an ambrosial brunch.
The late-morning feast at Oasis on the Beach at Waipouli proved a welcome reminder to just roll with whatever life throws your way.
Plans for your nature walk get rained out? Play the bad-weather card and lose yourself in a chorus of conversation over a relaxed meal.
I have to remind myself that it’s OK to slow down and enjoy the simple things. Chief among them at this particular brunch was savoring the surprising combinations of flavors and drink pairings.
Oasis on the Beach’s recently revised menu (85 percent locally produced!) offers an amazing array of dishes to delight your palate.
With so many interesting creations to choose from, I was glad a friend of mine made those selections for us. Server Sam Mitzel — a local photographer whose scenic shots adorn the menu’s cover and the restaurant’s website — helped us kick off our morning of gluttony with some Grilled Pancakes topped with Roasted Maui Pineapple and Maple Bacon Cream.
This dish to share found good company with an Oat and Banana Brulee Parfait, which is as fun to say as swallow. The Bubbles and Tangelo washed down the first course quite well.
We easily could have loosened our belts a notch at this point, kicked back on the nearby beach and called it a day. But what is a Sunday brunch without overdoing it?
It was a good thing we didn’t quit while we were ahead. The Short-rib Hash and Poached Eggs with Jalapeno Hollandaise was mind-blowing. Only twice (in Portland and New York) have I ever had a breakfast that delicious.
Pair this with a Chorizo-infused Tequila, a Bloody Mary-inspired seasoned tomato juice with Kaua‘i lime-sour, Hawaiian peppers and cilantro. Heaven.
Finishing the morning off in typical Hunter S. Thompson fashion, albeit while watching whales spout near the horizon, the Bubbles and Absinthe was a winning recommendation. All in all, it was a tough day at the mobile office researching the brightest new ideas in cuisine on Kaua‘i.
While we lamented the postponement of our hike, we underscored the discovery of a new culinary hot spot we’ll be sure to visit again.
