LIHU‘E — The public is invited to attend a meeting to discuss the county’s plans for an adolescent drug treatment center on Kaua‘i, a county news release states.
The meeting will be held at 6 p.m., Thursday, at the Lihu‘e Neighborhood Center.
“After a long search and consideration of many factors, we have narrowed the location of the adolescent drug treatment center down to two proposed sites in central Kaua‘i,” Anti-Drug Coordinator Theresa Koki said in the release. “We invite the community to come to the meeting on Thursday and be a part of this important discussion.”
Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. also encourages residents to get personally involved in this effort and assist in making the drug treatment center a reality.
“A recent series of meetings focusing on the critical need to provide these services for our youth has made us hopeful that the so-called ‘NIMBY’ issues are behind us and that our community is ready to move forward on behalf of our kids,” said the mayor.
In 2007, the county’s plan to site the center in Hanapepe at the former Kaua‘i Humane Society location was abandoned due to community opposition.
“We’ve had many discussions and have done much research and outreach in the years since then,” said Koki. “With the community’s support we know that we can be successful this time around.”
