KAPA‘A — Mike Alonzo broke a 0-0 defensive slugfest in the 63rd minute to give the Kapa‘a junior varsity boys a 1-0 edge over Waimea, Thursday night at the New Kapa‘a Town Park stadium.
Ashlie Overmyer was able to get a head on a Chloe Fredericksen corner kick in the 19th minute to lead the Kapa‘a JV girls to its 1-0 edge over Waimea in the earlier game.
Leiana Alejandro found the goal twice in the second half to give the Kaua‘i JV girls its 2-0 edge against Island School in an exhibition match played at Vidinha Stadium.
Both Warrior teams played strong defense and smart soccer, keeping the ball away from the Menehune threats.
For the Warrior girls, the goal came midway through the first half when Fredericksen’s corner kick settled in heavy traffic at the goalmouth and Overmyer headed the ball past the goalkeeper.
That gave the Warriors a cushion and despite Kapa‘a having the ball in the Menehune territory for most of the game, Waimea was occupied trying to prevent more damage.
Ember Teter and Bailey San Agustin-Nordmeier had their hands full contending with the charges of Kapa‘a’s Madisson Hinkel, Fredericksen and Coral Green who demonstrated her versatility, filling in at both offensive and defensive spots.
In the second half, Kapa‘a virtually sealed its win after one of the Menehune forwards, Jayme Knapp, sustained a game-stopping injury. That was followed by another injury, this time to Jourdan Corriea.
On the boys side, there was no score as both teams jockeyed for control utilizing a variety of techniques to get the ball past its opponents.
But Kapa‘a’s boys, like the girls, kept the ball on the Menehune side of the field and goalkeeper Bradley Ceballos had his hands full stopping both long and short balls.
Kapa‘a’s midfield and defense, anchored by Dylan Devin and Trevor McCracken, effectively limited touches by Waimea’s forwards Wyatt Taniguchi and Micah Quinlan, effective in his up-middle position.
Late in the second half, Kapa‘a’s Bryan broke open on the right wing and crossed to Alonzo for the goal, triggering substitutions from the Kapa‘a bench as coach Curtis Langstaff rested his starters.
Waimea travels to Vidinha Stadium, Saturday as the girls wrap up their season with the JV wahine kicking off at 10 a.m., followed by the JV boys at 11:45 a.m. The varsity girls square off starting at 1:30 p.m. followed by the varsity boys at 3:30 p.m.
Island School will travel to the New Kapa‘a Town Park stadium where the varsity boys square off starting at 10 a.m. followed by the JV girls in an exhibition match starting at noon.
