Donovan Gomes, a new rider to motocross, was on his way for a whole shot during the first race hosted by the Kaua‘i Motorcycle Racers Association in Wailua.
But the weather won when Gomes, riding his Kawasaki, tumbled in what was described as “a spectacular first-turn crash.”
That gave the run to Nicholas Byram who capitalized on the mishap in the 65 cc class, followed by Teagan Amorin on a KTM, Kanon Douglas, Traytin Barretto, Gomes, and Kai Norman rounding out the class.
“The racing was called off after the first heat races were completed due to a large storm with thunder, lightning, winds and rain passing over the island,” said Brian Barretto in a release. “Though the weather didn’t cooperate, there was some exciting racing that went on.”
Barretto said with the wet conditions, there were lots of spills and no races were held on the Keiki Track.
“We had to end it early to keep everyone safe,” said Paul Medeiros, president of KMRA. “We had flaggers, scorekeepers, riders and spectators out in that inclement weather.”
Brysen Yoro controlled the 85 cc class followed by Treysen Barretto, Nicholas Byram, Jenessa Maghanoy, Hayden Merkel and Bryzen Cadiz.
Kaipo Estrella topped the 125 cc class, demonstrating his skill in the mud. Jeff Skinner followed in second place atop his Yamaha followed by Ryan Merkel, Shalea Kelly and Kimo Azares.
Michael Carvalho, riding a Yamaha, was the sole 125 Expert rider in the rain.
Daryl Dabin pulled off the 250 Amateur class in the final lap when Brandon Orsatelli was victimized by the goop. He recovered to settle for second place over Efren Taylan.
Brandon Carvalho topped the 250 Expert class, finishing the heat with the fastest laps on the morning at 2:12. He was followed by Puna Gallardo and Kalei Souza.
Chava Greenlee traded his surfboard for a Kawasaki to capture top honors in the Vet class with Darrell Dabin and Riley Takayama, normally a Kaua‘i Raceway Park drag racer.
Veteran rider David Amorin topped the Masters class aboard a Honda, followed by Mark Stiglmeier, Ethan Kelly, Barry Simmons and Craig Arzadon.
Pancho Lopes’ Yamaha topped the Quad class, followed by Sheldon Garcia and Irwin Santiago.
The next race for KMRA is March 13 at the Wailua Motocross Track.
Riders are invited to ride practice on the weekends as well as state and county holidays.
