LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i High School varsity girls came up with five unanswered goals in the second half to take a 5-2 win over Kapa‘a, Saturday at Vidinha Stadium.
“Kapa‘a was up 2-0,” said one parent. “And then, I don’t know what happened to the defense, but after the game, there was a lot of crying going on.”
Hunter Rice-Hudson boomed a ball from near midfield that soared above the hands of a leaping Dylan Snyder and was snagged by the folds of the net as Kapa‘a saved a potential loss and settled for a 2-2 stalemate in the 67th minute of the second varsity game.
Earlier in the day, Bryson Tacata came up with a net in the 41st minute to give Waimea a 1-1 tie with Island School who got its goal from Logan Domingo in the 27th minute at the Island School campus.
Sanoe Taniguchi-Simbre, always a threat in the forward position, picked up a goal to give the Menehune a 1-0 edge over Island School in a girls exhibition match.
Chloe Fredericksen and Madisson Hinkel found the folds for Kapa‘a as the Warrior junior varsity girls took a 2-0 win over Kaua‘i in the day’s opener at Vidinha Stadium, just recently opened following its refurbishment and renovations.
The Alonzo boys, Daniel and Mike, pushed the Kapa‘a JV boys to a 2-1 edge over Kaua‘i who got its sole goal from Anthony Gammerino.
Lily Fredericksen, being asked out during the grueling first half, came through with an excellent follow through play when Kawehi Louis-Diamond, the Kaua‘i goalkeeper, stopped an initial shot-on-goal in the 8th minute.
The ball bounced out of her arms and rolled along the plane of the goal mouth to the leftside where Lily was waiting with the primed shoe for the goal.
“Give us five minutes,” was the call from Colby Ayonon to Lily who kept looking for relief.
Alana Andrews put the Warrior wahine up 2-0, but Alyssa “Malu” Vegas led the Raiders’ comeback, scoring two goals in the second half and getting help with goals from Megan Wong, Malia Kagawa and Kelsey Cadiente who celebrated her birthday Friday night at the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation girls basketball game.
Corey Nemeth put the Kaua‘i boys up with goals in the 24th and 53rd minutes, the second coming from a penalty kick which soared right, past the outstretched Kapa‘a goalkeeper Shane Nishioka-Healy for a 2-1 edge.
Kapa‘a set the stage early when Kanoa Nartatez, opting to forego the KIF qualifying swim where he already picked up a state consideration swim, for soccer.
Natatez in the up-middle spot, opened the books in the sixth minute for the Kapa‘a lead until late in the first half when Nemeth stalemated the match 1-1.
There was the undefeated status that had to be preserved and Kapa‘a battled back against a relentless red force, getting its window in the 67th minute when Hunter Rice-Hudson, under constant pressure in the midfield, was open just long enough to boom the ball from near-midfield.
That ball soared above the outstretched arms of a leaping Dylan Snyder and found the folds in the far corner for the 2-2 stalemate.
Kapa‘a hosts Waimea, Wednesday at the New Kapa‘a Town Park stadium with the varsity girls kicking off at 4:30 p.m. and the varsity boys starting at 6:30 p.m.
Kaua‘i will host Island School at Vidinha Stadium in a single varsity boys match starting at 4 p.m.
The JV teams will be playing Thursday.
