LIHU‘E — The first workshop by Regional Sediment Management, a group of state and national agencies, is scheduled from 1 to 6 p.m. today at Kaua‘i Veterans Center, 3215 Kapule Highway, Lihu‘e.
The workshop will provide updates on RSM’s efforts to date and provide opportunities for discussion of optimizing use of sediment resources within the Po‘ipu and Kekaha regions.
Presentations will be made on coastal processes modeling, offshore sand-source inventories, sediment budgets and RSM plans for each region.
According to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ website, USACE, Honolulu District, initiated the Kekaha Regional Sediment Management Demonstration Program in January 2008.
“The goal of the demonstration program is to change the paradigm of project specific management to focusing on a regional approach in which USACE as well as state and local agencies stop managing projects and begin ‘managing the sand.’” the site says.
The RSM Plan consists of a calibrated regional sediment budget, a calibrated numerical regional prediction system, and a regional data management and Geographic Information System (GIS).
RSM offers an interactive online map of the Kekaha plan and features “interactive GIS layers, historical and current satellite and aerial imagery, shoreline features, sand modeling outputs, and much more.”
Those interested in attending the workshop are asked to e-mail Tom Smith at thomas.d.smith@usace.army.mil. USACE public information officer Joseph Bonfiglio said this is not an open, public meeting.
