KAPA‘A — The boys have been anxious to get back on the soccer field and the threat of inclement weather was not going to stop them, said Todd Fuertes, a Kapa‘a boys soccer coach.
Fuertes said the boys exchanged their soccer balls for shop vacuums and yard tools to get rid of the standing water at the New Kapa‘a Town Park stadium.
Earlier in the week, the passage of a weather front generated strong winds and wet conditions forcing the cancellation of Wednesday’s matches due to standing water on the fields and unsafe playing conditions.
“The boys are very anxious to get back on the field,” Fuertes said. “They did whatever they had to do to make sure we could play.”
Six games unfolded at both the Kapa‘a and Island School sites as the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation capitalized on damp, but clear weather to get off its slate of games, the Kapa‘a field muddy, but playable.
Chaturon Promsakhan netted a hat trick, or a string of three goals, to lead Kaua‘i varsity boys to a 3-0 shutout over Island School in one of two games played at the Puhi campus, Saturday morning.
Whitney Pigao, normally a strong defender for the Junior Varsity girls, netted the sole goal for the Kaua‘i JV girls in its 1-0 edge over Island School in an exhibition match, giving Kaua‘i a sweep in its outing.
Reiko Yoshida, the Red Raiders’ varsity girls’ coach, took advantage of her team’s bye to take in the Waimea contest against Kapa‘a, one of four games played at the New Kapa‘a Town Park stadium.
“She just texted me saying the game ended in a tie,” said Ross Shimabukuro, the Kaua‘i athletic director who was taking in the KIF boys basketball game at Waimea High School.
Taetra Christiansen struck early for Kapa‘a, netting a goal in the first 10 minutes of play for the 1-0 halftime edge.
Waimea capitalized on a bench, moving Jayme Jacinto into the up-middle spot instead of stopper, and with the arrival of Charlene Miguel from the KIF qualifying swim meet, the Menehune got bolstered strength in the midfield despite the injury sustained from Haley Cristobal who left the game briefly to clean a strawberry knee suffered on a slide off the spectator side.
Waimea answered in the second half when Mahea Hurd found the goal in a card-peppered half.
Lily Fredericksen, Alana Anderson and Mia Cabulisan got misconduct warnings for Kapa‘a while Ku‘uleinani Breen was the Menehune recipient in the 1-1 stalemate.
But misconduct warnings weren’t limited to that game as Matt Domingcil got one for the Kapa‘a varsity boys in its 1-0 edge over Waimea, the Warriors getting its sole goal from Lowan Gonzales.
Earlier in the day, Ashlie Overmyer netted two goals to lead the Kapa‘a JV girls to its 4-0 win over Waimea, Madisson Hinkel and Taylor Foster adding the other two goals in the Kapa‘a win.
Micah Quinlan found the goal with just seconds remaining in Waimea’s JV boys’ game against Kapa‘a, but the effort could not overcome a 4-0 lead.
Daniel Alonzo netted two goals, the second coming after the JV wing won the ball over the efforts of Waimea stopper Erik Siles and Alonzo fired a rifle shot from about 25 yards out. That led the Kapa‘a JV in its 4-1 win, the other two goals coming from Edsel Lactaotao and J.B. Goode.
Waimea will travel to the New Kapa‘a Town Park stadium on Wednesday where it will meet Kaua‘i High School, the varsity girls kicking off at 4:30 p.m. followed by the varsity boys’ match starting at 6:30 p.m.
Kapa‘a varsity boys will be in action against Island School in Puhi starting at 4 p.m.
