Added thoughts on society
Considering the problems in most countries, being a citizen in the USA is perhaps highly desirable.
However, as said before (“Society,” Letters, Dec. 22), this is not to say our social structure has reached the ultimate in design and function. The human species has existed only a speck of time considering the universe is over 13 billion years old, and recorded history of the human species is only about 7,000 years.
The only reason we are not still burning “witches” at the stake is because of the advancements made in science as opposed to mysticism.
The law of gravity discovered by Isaac Newton in the 17th century precipitated changes in the way most men viewed catastrophic events.
The plague, as an example, was found to be caused by a controllable entity rather than God’s gaining vengeance against us.
If knowledge is infinite, as hypothesized, then perfection of almost everything is not possible, but this also tells us that there is always the possibility for improvement in the existing. This must include the social as well as the physical world since both sets of knowledge exist in our world.
Considering the world’s existing problems — wars, poverty, pollution, ignorance and ad-nauseum — I submit that significant changes are not only possible but imperative.
Considering that all past and existing social structures have consisted of forced leaderships selected from a tribal group, by force, hereditary or so called majority election, isn’t it about time we started thinking outside this existing box?
Is it possible that forced (coercive) leadership is the condition that has restricted our advancement in the social world?
The concept that wild anarchy would reign supreme may be just a bogey-man to restrict our thinking outside this forced leadership box.
Property protection is the only reason for a government and I assert that there must be a better way than what exists to protect the all-important property each of us own, including our life. Today more property is attacked than protected.

Mahalo for KPAL
As we start up our KPAL North Shore Basketball League season I want to spread the word, how thankful we need to be for KPAL — Kaua‘i Police Activities League. It is now over 15 years I have been involved in this program, and have dealt with county, community and school programs, but none of them can compare to the professionalism of the Kaua‘i Police Activities Program.
Whether it’s getting paper work done, T-shirts ordered or dealing with a child in need of a mentor, KPAL has shown its program to have the respect of the community, the caring like a mother toward a child, and the foresight to improve our island one child at a time.
I have been involved with elections, Red Cross, emergency preparedness, school boards, PTSA, Lions, sports programs and etc., but none of my community work makes me as proud to be allowed to be part of KPAL.
I ask all of our island community to help keep this program going by a word to our Mayor, County Council members, Police Chief and encouraging all of our police officers by saying thanks.
Some days we all can shake our heads at the things that go on our island, but there is always hope in the future of our island keiki, and the Kaua‘i Police Activities Program is one of the best ways to help them.
A special thank you to our Police Chief Daryl Perry for all his support, a big mahalo to all of our police officers, and a very big mahalo to officer Mark Ozaki, who without him there would be no KPAL.

No to useless bike path
This is regarding the letter “Bike path is a waste of funds,” by Glenn Mickens.
Sir, I agree with you. I’ve written several letters myself concerning opening and paving of cane-haul roads, especially opening Powerline Road. Also, for the Westside to build a couple more bridges. First bridge connecting upper ‘Ele‘ele to upper Hanapepe heights. Second bridge over Waimea River to the old cane-haul road in Waimea through Kekaha.
DOT, Mayor Carvalho, and anybody in the Planning Commission, is anyone listening?
You already have your bike/walk path, which caused problems from dog poop to walkers being nearly run over by bicyclists.
We’ve hardly heard that people are using the path to go to work. Has anyone heard of a construction worker riding his/her bike on the path with equipment (wood, saw, etc.) needed for a job?
There aren’t many jobs in the area that one can use the path to commute. If people want to hike we have lots of trails to walk on around the island and up in Koke‘e State Park.
We need more roads now, not more useless bike/walk paths.
