Two Kaua’i Police Activities League boxers — and brothers — Kristopher and Kelii Alcos, entered a tournament held at the Momilani Community Center on O‘ahu the weekend before Christmas, bringing home two trophies as early Christmas presents, according to a K-PAL press release.
The tournament was sponsored by the Pearlside O‘ahu Boxing Club and featured 23 bouts with boxers from O‘ahu, Maui, Big Island, Moloka‘i and Kaua‘i.
Kelii “The Natural” Alcos, a 12-year-old K-PAL boxer in the 65-pound division and the defending Hawai‘i state champion, was matched up against Maika Samson-Giron of Pearlside O‘ahu Boxing Club. Kelii dominated all three rounds, landing his signature lead uppercut, followed by a straight rear hand practically at will from both conventional and southpaw stances, scoring a unanimous decision over the hometown favorite.
Older brother Kristopher “The Real Deal” Alcos, 13, also a defending Hawai‘i state champion, fought in the 80-pound division against Diamond Uti of the Waipahu O‘ahu Boxing Club. Kristopher moved up two weight divisions just to get a match with Uti, who boxes in the 90-pound division. Kristopher came out throwing punches in bunches to win the first round. Uti returned the favor in the second round, pressing Kristopher, evening the bout at one round apiece. In the third round, Kristopher switched from pressure fighting to slick boxing, footwork and hand speed, proving his nickname “The Real Deal’ and won the third round significantly to earn a unanimous decision victory.
K-PAL will be hosting the 2nd Annual Ken Oki Memorial Statewide Boxing Tournament on Kaua‘i, Jan. 22, 2011 at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihu‘e.
K-PAL plans on showcasing Kaua‘i’s talented boxers from K-PAL Central, K-PAL West, Up & Up Boxing Club Kapa‘a, Keith Delima’s Westside Boxing Club and other unattached Kaua‘i clubs against boxers from throughout the state of Hawai‘i, featuring over 20 bouts.
