LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i RSVP on Monday announced the kick-off of its used cell phone collection campaign.
The campaign is a fundraising effort and the proceeds will benefit the Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity, a county news release states. Kaua‘i RSVP is part of the county Agency on Elderly Affairs.
Cell phone companies have pledged to donate between 50 cents and $30 for each cell phone turned in depending on the model and condition of the phone.
The used cell phone drive will end on Jan. 17 at the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration, which will be held at Kukui Grove Center from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
“This is a great opportunity for the community to donate to an important cause without reaching into their wallets, and at the same time, responsibly recycle used cell phones,” said Kealoha Takahashi, head of the Agency on Elderly Affairs.
Used cell phones and cell phone batteries can be dropped off at any of the following locations during normal business hours:
— Agency on Elderly Affairs – Lihu‘e Civic Center, Pi‘ikoi Building, 4444 Rice St. suite 330
— All neighborhood centers – Hanapepe, Kalaheo, Kapa‘a, Kekaha, Kilauea, Koloa, Lihu‘e, and Waimea
— Mahelona Hospital
Kaua‘i RSVP Director Linda Nuland-Ames noted that Jan. 17, 2011 marks the 25th anniversary of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
“This milestone gives us a chance to honor Dr. King’s life and legacy by doing our part to help our island home by diverting trash from the landfill,” said Nuland-Ames. “As Dr. King said, ‘Everyone can be great … because anybody can serve … You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love.’”
Businesses and schools are also encouraged to initiate their own used cell phone collection campaigns.
RSVP is America’s largest volunteer network made up of people ages 55 or better. Nearly 500,000 RSVP volunteers across the country use their life experiences to help their respective communities.
Last year, RSVP members donated more than 65,000 hours of service to the Kaua‘i community.
