Swim Kaua‘i Aquatics ended the year on a high note when its team of 10 swimmers finished 16th out of 33 teams at the Hawai‘i Short Course State Championships last weekend.
Yasmine Ware, 13, as she’s done in previous meets, set the bar for the SKA performance, breaking the one-minute mark for the 100 Yard Backstroke on a 58.8-second swim, a Sectional qualifying time.
That performance that came in torrential downpours on the island, earned her State Champion honors for her age group.
Kate Machorek, swimming in the same event, finished third overall on a 1:01.37 swim. Of note, Machorek entered the Girls 13-14 age group just two weeks prior to the state meet.
Both girls continued to set standards, Ware getting fourth on a 2:12.72 swim in the 200 Yard Backstroke, and Machorek following in fifth on a 2:13.31 swim, a Zone qualifying time.
Machorek finished the meet with a sixth place in the 500 Yard Freestyle with her 5:31.91 swim.
Ware continued on, pocketing second-place finishes in the 50 Yard Free (24.75) and the 100 Yard Free (53.69).
Anya Littlefield, a Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation swimmer, showed strong in the Girls 15-16 division with second-place finishes in the 500 Yard Free, 1000 Yard Free and the 1650 Free.
She earned a new short course Zone time in the 200 Yard Free with a 1:58.92 showing for seventh overall. Her overall performance earned her Top 8 in the 200 Yard Butterfly, 200 Yard Backstroke, and the 100 Yard Freestyle.
Jack Machorek, 10, was almost perfect, showing personal bests in seven of the eight events he swam in, and a budding potential showing in the distance events.
Jack finished with three eighth-place medals for placing in the 200 Yard Free (2:29.28), the 200 Yard Individual Medley (2:54.18) and the 100 Yard Breaststroke (1:33.12).
He just missed the finals in two other events, the 100 Yard IM (1:19.64) and the 50 Yard Backstroke (37.23), finishing ninth overall in the Boys 10 Under division.
Sophie Britzmann, 15, picked up improvements in five events, her notable event coming in the 400 Yard IM where she dropped 7.8 seconds and won the heat for an 11th finish. Her other achievements came in the 200 Yard Free (2:06.31), the 200 Yard Backstroke (2:23.17) and the 200 Yard IM (2:24.86).
Ware and Kate Machorek joined Tambrina Fairbanks, 14, and Jazmyn Ibaan Carvalho, 13, in the Girls 13-14 relay team that finished in fourth overall in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, and the the 400 Yard Medley Relay.
“Fairbanks and her younger brother Dutch, 10, both swam very well in their first state championships,” said SKA coach Billy Brown. “Tambrina looked strong in her 100 Yard Breaststroke (1:17.76) and Dutch had a furious finish to out-touch his opponent on his 50 Yard Freestyle (33.73), cutting 1.17 seconds in that event.”
Quinn Hannah White, 14, demonstrated his experience with a well-paced race in the 1000 Yard Freestyle (11:41.93) in the heaviest of rains on the final day of the meet.
Tyler Keith, 14, also battled through the rain in the 1000 Yard Freestyle (12:11.69) with his greatest achievement coming in the 50 Yard Freestyle (26.35) where he sliced .26 seconds off his seeded time.
“Our team showed up and represented well,” Brown said. “I am so proud of what we have done at the state meet as well as throughout the season. Our 2010 season officially ended on a great note.”
