HANAPEPE — Isaac Fierro had a hat trick to lead Waimea to a 7-1 win over the Kaua‘i JV boys, Thursday at Hanapepe Stadium.
In an atmosphere heavy with moisture from a late-afternoon squall, the girls battled to a 0-0 stalemate in the nightcap.
Waimea took control of the boys match from the opening, netting three goals in the first half, and despite liberal substitutions to get everyone in the game, finished with four second-half goals.
Kaua‘i, having strong play from Anthony Gammerino and its No. 2 goalkeeper Ben Smith, was able to get just one goal in the 60th minute when Timothy Snofner chipped the ball over heavy traffic and past the Menehune goalkeeper.
Waimea boys relied on their three strong forwards to find the net, Fierro getting his third goal for the hat trick in the 56th minute after Micah Quinlan boomed the ball from the left side.
The ball squirted past the Kaua‘i defender and Smith before Fierro closed the door from the opposite side.
Quinlan opened the books in the fourth minute with his goal that rolled past the Kaua‘i opening goalkeeper.
Following a series of defensive exchanges, Wyatt Taniguchi rolled up the right side and boomed the Menehune’s second goal from about 25 yards out in the 25th minute.
Three minutes later, the Menehune logged their third goal on a Fierro score at the 28th minute for the 3-0 margin at the half.
Waimea added another Quinlan goal at the 39th minute with a move described by varsity goalkeeper Beau Acoba as a “move around” when Quinlan smartly controlled the ball and slipped it past Smith.
Four minutes later, Fierro netted his second goal of the night, and Erik Siles nailed a penalty kick in the 52nd minute.
Fierro’s last goal came at the 56th minute before Kaua‘i was able to get on the board at the 60th minute.
Kaua‘i girls appeared to have control of the ball through most of the first half, but were unable to close the door as Menehune defenders Bailey San Agustin-Nordmeir, Tierra and Ember Teter, and Kayhla Cachero-Ramos kept the door shut.
Joni Hashizume sparked the Red Raider offensive effort, but through heavy substitutions, was unable to net any points.
Marissa Ruiz got some touches, as did midfielder/defender Ciara Caires.
Whitney Pigao came in as a second-half transition player and defender, keeping Waimea’s Jayme Knapp off balance.
Kaua‘i next plays Kapa‘a on Thursday at the New Kapa‘a Town Park, starting with the boys at 4:30 p.m. and the girls squaring off starting at 6:30 p.m.
