LIHU‘E — A Hawaiian-style Santa and his helpers gave kupuna at nursing homes a Christmas treat this week.
The Rotary Club of West Kaua‘i on Monday piloted the Santa. The jolly old elf and his entourage stopped to visit care homes on the Westside.
“Our kupuna are truly treasures and will always be part of Kaua‘i’s great heritage,” West Kaua‘i Rotarian Liz Hahn said.
Kupuna were treated to Christmas caroling and gifts provided by the Rotarians and their community volunteer partners.
“Like Toys for Tots, Gifts for Grands helps spread both the spirit of our holiday season and the principles of The Rotary Club,” Hahn said. “The Rotary Club of West Kaua‘i has adopted Gifts for Grands as an annual service project and hopes to expand this event island-wide next year.”
Hahn said the long-term goal for the Rotarians is to bring the program to the entire state, and perhaps fostering the adoption of the practice nationwide.
The annual Gifts for Grands comes in the midst of holiday activities the club was involved in, starting with its participation in the 17th Annual Waimea Lighted Parade, and closing off its calendar year with the annual Christmas party, Monday night at Wrangler’s Restaurant.
