HANAPEPE — A late-game goal by Lucas Gushikuma pushed the Kaua‘i boys varsity soccer team to a 3-2 edge over Waimea in the first game of a double-header at the Hanapepe Stadium, Wednesday.
Malia Kagawa and Kelsey Cadiente each netted two goals to lead the Kaua‘i girls team to an 8-0 shutout over the Menehune in the nightcap.
In a third game played at the Island School field, Kapa‘a established itself with a 3-0 first half showing en route to a 5-0 shutout over the Voyagers.
Calvin Rux, Brycen Phillips, Matt Domingcil, Justin Langstaff and Torren Kimura each scored goals for the Warriors in their win at the Island School complex.
Similarly, the Kaua‘i boys set the tone early, scoring two goals in the first 13 minutes of play against the Menehune.
Chaturon Promsakhan charged up the right side and capped the drive by sliding past Waimea goalkeeper Beau Acoba for the goal at the five-minute mark.
Three minutes later, Kainoa French found the net to cap a throw-in.
“Don’t give up,” Waimea coach Darren Kosen called to his players. “It’s not over. This is like practice.”
Those comments helped perk up the Menehune who found the net at the 19th minute when their forward capped a corner kick for a 2-1 Kaua‘i edge at the half.
Josh Quinlan knotted the contest at 2-2 less than two minutes into the second half, that deadlock remaining until the waning minutes of the game when Gushikuma netted the go-ahead, said Ross Shimabukuro, the Kaua‘i athletic director who was getting text updates while at the opener of the boys basketball season.
Following the lead of Kagawa and Cadiente, Lisa Tangalin, Jannin Hashizume and Alyssa “Malu” Vegas scored in the Kaua‘i girls victory.
The final goal was an own goal by a Waimea player.
Despite the lopsided score, action was tight causing Cascade Mayer to receive a referee’s warning.
With the sweep, Kaua‘i next travels to the New Kapa‘a Town Park stadium on Wednesday to take on the Warriors, while Waimea hosts Island School in a single game at Hanapepe Stadium starting at 4 p.m.
The Kapa‘a games feature the varsity boys starting at 4:30 p.m. followed by the girls game at about 6:30 p.m.
