The Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative Charitable Foundation released $30,000 to the Kaua‘i Economic Opportunity agency to assist qualified low-income electricity users with their electric bills, states a release from KIUC.
“In 2010, the Emergency Electric Assistance program funded by the KIUC Charitable Foundation assisted 96 households totalling $19,191,” said Lynn Kua, KEO Administrative Officer, who accepted the check from Steve Rapozo, KIUC Charitable Foundation member, and Allan Smith, president of the KIUC Charitable Foundation. “These households were faced with a past due, or urgent notice to prevent the shut off of its electric service.”
Smith said since 2008, the KIUC Charitable Foundation has released more than $80,000 to help those who need assistance with their electric bills.
Gov. Linda Lingle, in 2005, signed legislation enabling KIUC to keep and use for charitable purposes, unclaimed refunds that would have previously been turned over to the state.
None of the funds come from KIUC assets, according to the release.
The KIUC Charitable Foundation is governed by nine directors, made up of three KIUC Directors, three KIUC employees, and three KIUC members.
