WAILUA — Kapa‘a High School took five of six events at the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation paddling regatta, Saturday at the Wailua River.
The only event not controlled by the Warriors was the Girls JV division where the Red Raider wahine were just a few seconds faster than the Warriors.
Kaua‘i girls crossed the line on a 4:24.63 paddle over Kapa‘a (4:27.03) and Waimea (4:43.29).
All of the other divisions saw the Warriors claim top honors, paced by the varsity boys who clinched the top spot on a 3:46.44 run in the finals, rebounding from its performance last week when the crew was disqualified for burying the flag.
That division race was for second place when Kaua‘i boys were just about a half second ahead of Waimea, the Raiders crossing on a 3:54.30 over Waimea’s 3:54.92 run.
In the varsity girls race, the Warrior wahine came from behind to take the race on the top end, crossing at 4:15.23 to Kaua‘i’s 4:25.90 run and Waimea’s 4:28.80 finish.
The varsity Mixed division was a closely-contested run, the swing coming in the turn.
Kaua‘i held a slight lead heading into the buoys, but a surge from the Warriors pushed its canoe into the turn, capitalizing on its power seats to control the surge.
Kaua‘i clinged to its edge coming out of the turn, but the Kapa‘a power slipped the canoe to a 4:07.78 finish in the current lane over Kaua‘i’s 4:13.08 run. Waimea did not field a team for this division.
Kapa‘a boys controlled the JV Boys on a 3:57.82 run over Kaua‘i’s 4:24.43 run, and in the JV Mixed division, Kapa‘a topped Waimea on a 4:10.54 run over the Menehune 4:14.21 showing. Kaua‘i finished third at 4:19.05.
With Christmas and New Year’s both falling on regatta days, the KIF will host its next regatta, January 8 starting at 10 a.m. at the Wailua River.
