LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative members should be receiving copies of the new 2011 Student Art calendar in the mail soon, according to KIUC spokesperson Maile Moriguchi.
That announcement came on the heels of a recognition ceremony where student artists whose work contributed to the calendar were recognized by the KIUC staff, Board of Directors and judges.
Celebrating its eighth year, the KIUC Calendar of Student Art contest is designed to encourage and promote young artists on the island.
This year’s contest drew more than 1,200 entries from students in kindergarten through grade 12, facing judges Marty Kahn, Lisa Kahn Macko and Mary Nakamura.
Kimberly Corpuz, a 10th grade student at Kapa‘a High School, emerged as the 2010 grand prize winner with her charcoal rendering of Queen Lili‘uokalani.
Samantha Smith, a kindergartener at Kaua‘i Pacific School, was selected to represent the cover of the calendar.
Kaua‘i Pacific School also placed Shaughnessey Smith, a fourth grader, to represent April.
Elijah Ibbs of Kalaheo Elementary School had the honor of headlining January.
Kapa‘a Elementary School picked up the February, March and May pages with artwork from Waika Rogers, Dylan Niide and Stephanie Delos Santos.
Carlos Ygov-Tapia, La‘akea Gonsalves and Aulani Kaui were selected as honorable mentions from Kapa‘a Elementary.
Three students in the private instruction category earned pages for June, July and November as well as one honorable mention. Noah Nemeroff, a sixth grader, Same Goldberg, a seventh grader, and Kathleen Bissell, an 11th grader, took page honors while Eli Smart, a sixth grader, got the honorable mention nod.
Zuri Shanklin, an eighth grade student at Kapa‘a Middle School, will grace the August page.
Katie Peterson, a seventh grade student, received an honorable mention.
Megan Scholl, a ninth grade student at Kapa‘a High School, headlined the Warriors’ accolades, getting the September page. In addition to Corpuz’s grand prize honor, Scholl captured two honorable mentions, and Kristen Watanabe, a senior, also received honorable mention accolades.
Griffin Lord, a 10th grade student at Island School, will be gracing the October page.
Nikki Limpert of Kaua‘i High School closes the year with the December page.
She is joined by Reanna Javinar, an 11th grade student, and Matthew Mizukami, a senior, who both received honorable mention awards.
Ela Perozo, a kindergartener at Natural Bridges, Shayne Shibuya, a kindergartener at the King Kaumuali‘i Elementary School, Alex Forman, a fourth grader at Kilauea Elementary School, Kamalei Pascua, a second grader at King Kaumuali‘i, Mikaela Depoe, and Chandi Cabral, a kindergartener and first grade student, respectively at ‘Ele‘ele Elementary School, all received honorable mention nods.
