LIHU‘E — Three Kaua‘i players headed over to Maui for the 2010 Hawai‘i State Racquetball Doubles Championships, Dec. 10-12 in Wailuku.
All three came away with good showings as the tournament’s largest draw to date pitted players hailing from O‘ahu, Maui, Big Island and the three Kaua‘i competitors.
Philip Eliana Jr., who took a doubles gold medal and a silver in singles at the All-Military National Racquetball Championships, held Nov. 12-14 in San Diego, Calif., this time partnered with a Maui teammate.
A Hawai‘i Air National Guard Staff Sergeant, Eliana did not have a partner in his age group division, so he teamed with Mark Makimoto to compete in the “45+ and Under” division, which is two age group levels below where he would typically play.
Even after suffering an injury in November’s tournament, Eliana and Makimoto took second place in their division.
Cory Rita and Donald Kubisch, each with less than a year of racquetball experience, decided to enter the tournament to gain some experience. Due to a lack of teams for a “D/Novice” division, the duo moved up two levels to the “B/C” division.
In the end, the pair came in second place in the “C” division.
