HANAPEPE — As the winds began to get chilly on the Westside, the Kapa‘a Lady Warriors turned up the heat with a second-half splurge on their way to a 7-1 win over the Waimea Lady Menehune, Saturday at Hanapepe Stadium.
HANAPEPE — As the winds began to get chilly on the Westside, the Kapa‘a Lady Warriors turned up the heat with a second-half splurge on their way to a 7-1 win over the Waimea Lady Menehune, Saturday at Hanapepe Stadium.
The game-winning goal was credited to Taylor Ochoa, though it was anything but ordinary. Ochoa beat her defender down the left side of the field and towards the box, but another Waimea defender then came in to make the clearance. She slammed the ball toward the sideline, but it hit Ochoa’s leg and bounded into the air at an awkward angle over the goalie, then came to rest inside the far post for a 2-1 Kapa‘a lead.
Rachel Hinkel gave the Warriors a 3-1 advantage, needing just one touch to boot home a goal from the top of the box, converting on a perfect cross from Lily Fredericksen that hit Hinkel in stride.
Fredericksen added a score when a through ball was sent to the middle of the field. With a defender on her hip, she controlled the ball at the top of the box. Waimea goalie Jayme Jacinto came out to challenge the play, but Fredericksen got her shot off past the sliding keeper and into the net.
Hinkel later added to her tally when she got to a rebound off a Sierra Mayer shot that had deflected off Jacinto.
Alana Andrews had a pair of late scores, each coming off corner-kick feeds from Mayer. The first was on a header as she found space towards the front post, the second was in an almost identical spot with her leg.
In the boys varsity action, Kapa‘a came away with a 2-1 victory over the home Waimea squad.
Max Goode and Hunter Rice-Hudson each scored for the Warriors. Goode’s goal came from the field, while Rice-Hudson’s game-winner was on a penalty kick.
Joshua Quinlan scored for Waimea, also on a penalty kick.
Playing the morning session at Island School, the Kaua‘i Red Raiders notched a 4-0 victory over the host Voyagers.
Mason Vegas had a first-half penalty kick to put Kaua‘i up 1-0, with Lucas Gushikama, Otis Llewellyn and Devin Portillo all scoring in the second half for the Raiders.
The Kapa‘a JV girls squad picked up a 2-1 win over the Waimea JV girls in morning action at Hanapepe Stadium.
Kaua‘i JV girls wwas a 4-0 winner over Island School, with goals coming from Tara Silverman in the opening minute, then Leiana Alesandro, Kyren Ishikawa and Kelly Meatoga later in the contest.
Varsity teams are back in action Wednesday, as Waimea will host Kaua‘i at Hanapepe Stadium. Varsity boys will take the field at 4:30 p.m., followed by the girls at 6:30 p.m.
Island School varsity boys will host Kapa‘a at 4 p.m.
