PORT ALLEN — Fred Pascual, a Contractors Association of Kaua‘i board member, on Thursday presented shopping bags, gift cards, a collection of foodstuffs, and assorted gifts, including several fishing outfits, to Salvation Army Lt. Sarah Smuda and soldiers Billie-Jae Akana-Sarasin and Lauren Estill.
“We worked with Lt. Smuda and fulfilled this wish list of a family she provided us,” said a CAK spokesperson. “This one goes to a single-parent family with eight children and the father having to juggle his work schedule while taking care of his family, ailing mother, and his own medical issues.”
In addition to the gift needs for the adopted family, CAK also presented The Salvation Army’s Hanapepe Corps with a collection of non-perishable foodstuffs and a monetary collection from its annual meeting held earlier in the month.
“Food from CAK meetings are always turned over to The Salvation Army for its pantry and Kokua Kitchen programs,” the spokesperson said. “Once a year, CAK also adopts a family and makes sure all of their holiday wishes are taken care of.”
During the 53rd Annual Meeting and Installation at the Kaua‘i Marriott Resort and Beach Club, Matt Taba of Linthicum Custom Builders was installed as the CAK president for 2011, replacing outgoing president Keith Suga of Goodfellow Brothers.
Jerry Nishek of Kaua‘i Nursery and Landscaping will serve as the first vice president, Maile Bryan of Martin A. Bryan, Inc. seats as the second vice president.
Jesse Akagi of The Gas Co. fills the secretary position with Dirk Apao of Finance Factors handling treasurer duties.
CAK directors include Tom Arnott of Jason Glover, Mike Aki of Hawai‘i Partition Systems, Susan Chandler of RSI/Rosa’s Supply, Laura Cushnie of Cushnie Construction, Bryan Davidson of Earthworks Pacific, David Hinazumi of The Grove Farm Co., Travis Horka of Custom Landscaping and Maintenance, Trinette Kaui of A&B Properties, Lanell Miyamoto of Kalei’s Steelworks, and Fred Pascual of the Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative.
Six member companies were recognized for their respective contributions to CAK, the community, and the construction industry, each firm receiving the honor, or in memory of, CAK charter members.
KIUC was the recipient of the Tsuro “Rosy” Maeda Member of the Year award. Eric Linthicum and Linthicum Custom Builders were recognized as the Contractor of the Year, receiving the Kennth Shioi award.
Kalei Gardner and Miyamoto of Kalei’s Steelworks were honored as recipients of the President’s Award, and the Hideo Tanaka Sub-Contractor of the Year honor was presented to Kaua‘i Nursery and Landscaping.
Aston Islander on the Beach was acknowledged as the Wayne E. Ellis award recipient for Associate Member of the Year, and A&B Properties was honored with the Robert Rask Spirit of CAK award for its community service, A&B Properties coordinating the collection of food from the CAK meetings throughout the year as well as the adopting of a Salvation Army family.
CAK was established in 1957 as a trade association of licensed contractors, suppliers, and businesses affiliated with the construction industry on Kaua‘i. It is also affiliated with the National Association of Home Builders.
