LIHU‘E — Zane Johnson and Bo Barnes each knocked down five 3-pointers as the Rainbow Warriors blew out Chicago State, 86-57, Friday night at the Lahaina Civic Center on Maui.
Hawai‘i made a rare visit to the neighbor islands but remained perfect within the state, improving to 7-2 on the season, 7-0 on the Hawaiian islands.
UH was led by Johnson’s 21 points as the sharpshooter also pulled down seven rebounds.
Barnes scored 17 and had five boards, while Joston Thomas had 15 points and six rebounds.
Bobby Miles dished out a game-high 10 assists while scoring seven points. Vander Joaquim had eight points and eight boards, while Douglas Kurtz had 12 points and six rebounds.
Carl Montgomery led Chicago State with 16 points and eight rebounds. Victor Scott added 12 points.
UH held a 39-29 lead at halftime but really poured it on in the second 20 minutes. It capitalized on the smaller Chicago State (3-10) team, outrebounding it by a 45-31 margin.
The hot shooting made it difficult for Chicago State to mount any sort of comeback, as the Rainbow Warriors were 12-of-25 from three-point range. They also went 24 for 34 from the foul line and shot 44 percent (25-of-57) from the field on the night.
While turnovers remain an issue for UH — it had 17 on Friday — this time they were not as big an obstacle as previous games, due to its clear size and skill advantages.
Hawai‘i will be off until the start of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, which opens up Wednesday at the Stan Sheriff Center.
UH will play in the final of four opening-day games, tipping off at 8 p.m. against Florida State.
The rest of the opening slate will feature Mississippi State vs. Washington State (10 a.m.), San Diego vs. Baylor (12 p.m.) and Utah vs. Butler (6 p.m.).
All teams will play again Thursday, depending on the first day’s results, with the final games and tournament championship taking place Dec. 25.
