PO‘IPU — Zack Haenyager and Chris Webster downed Herb Noe and Chas Okamoto, 10-8 to lock in the title for Men’s A Doubles, Sunday.
A three-way tie in the division saw the team of Haenyager and Webster get past the duo of Bernie Duarte and James Hasenyager, 10-6, to advance against Noe and Okamoto.
Earlier in the day, Noe and Okamoto had gotten past Haenyager and Webster 7-6, 6-2 before falling in the tie-breaker.
Keen competition was the highlight of the charity doubles match that benefited the Toys for Tots program. In addition to the tight competition in the men’s field, the women’s field saw top ranked state players Lani Rae Green, top ranked in the 14-16 age group, and Sarah Kukino, top ranked in her age group, vie for the finals in Women’s A.
Back on the men’s side, the Noe/Okamoto duo opened with a 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9) edge over Duarte/Hasenyager to advance against Roy Yokotake and Tracy Tucker, a match the pair won, 6-1, 6-1, Saturday before advancing to the finals.
The Haenyager/Webster pair also carded dual wins during the opening day, taking Yokotake/Tucker, 6-3, 6-2 before getting past Duarte/Hasenyager, 6-3, 6-4 for the tie.
With the win, Haenyager/Webster clinched the Men’s A with Noe/Okamoto settling for finalist honors.
The Morimoto duo of Shawn and Mikey took the Men’s B division with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Andrew Sugita and Dylan Wehrly, and the duo of Dan Miyamoto and Jerry Green clinched the Men’s C with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Drew Vento and Brian Stein.
Kimo Honda and Scotty Nakamatsu finished as Consolation winners in the Men’s B with a 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) win over Jim Anderson and Darrel Nonaka, evoking a comment from Bino Fitzgerald about the prawn steaming the uhu.
Clifford and Ruben Nonaka claimed the Consolation win in Men’s C with a 6-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8) win over David Werner and Christian Hallady.
In the women’s draw, Kukino teamed with Kristen Fuchigami to get past the duo of Green and Tammie Quinlan, 7-5, 6-3 for the Women’s A title, the winning pair finishing the tournament undefeated after opening with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Loutoa Zoller and Mari Anderson. They followed that win with a win over Michelle Martinez and Amy McLaughlin, taking the first set 6-3 before their opponents retired.
Michelle Fitzgerald and Rosemary Smythe captured the Women’s B title with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Judy Honda and Alana Fujikawa. Sonya Kunz teamed with Miriam Perimutter for the Consolation of that division with a 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5) win over BJ Coursey and Helen Bice.
Rachel Arii teamed with Nikki Matsumura to capture the Women’s C title with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Paula Nishi and JoAnn DiLeonardo.
“This was a very successful weekend with more than 100 people donating toys and money toward the Toys for Tots drive,” said Krystyna Noe, the tourney director. “We also had more than 30 businesses in the community who generously donated prizes for our participants.”
Krystyna said the Tournament Committee was appreciative of the rain stopping in Po‘ipu on Saturday, and bright sunny skies for the finals, Sunday.
The Toys for Tots tournament marks the end of the calendar year for the Charity Tennis series, and Krystyna said the series would not be possible without the help of Carolyn Caylor of the Po‘ipu Kai Association, Carolyn Lum of the Kaua‘i Tennis Association, Doug Sears, general manager of the Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort and Spa and the many behind-the-scenes volunteers.
