LIHU‘E — When Clifton Cabinatan was spotted by Kaua‘i Police Department officers in recent years, he managed to give them the slip.
That changed Monday morning when he was riding down Kuhio Highway in Wailua in the back seat of a pickup truck driven by his brother, Shandon Cabinatan, 20.
Clifton Cabinatan, 22, didn’t notice the unmarked KPD vehicle behind him.
Detectives called a patrol unit to make a traffic stop, and backup moved in to pin in the 2001 black Dodge pickup truck before anyone could flee the scene, according to police sources and a county press release.
Vice and patrol officers were able to apprehend him after a brief struggle, the release states. The younger Cabinatan was arrested for obstructing government operations and was later released.
Clifton Cabinatan, homeless but with a last known address in Hanama‘ulu, had been a regular face on The Garden Island’s Most Wanted criminals list provided by KPD. His arrest this week was for multiple charges: eight counts of contempt of court, one count of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and one count of resisting arrest.
He had been held in police cellblock unable to post $23,950 bail. He made a court appearance on three separate other cases before 5th Circuit Judge Kathleen Watanabe on Wednesday and currently is housed at Kaua‘i Community Correctional Center.
His bail is now $60,000, which includes the original bail based on a 2007 first-degree, sexual-assault case for which he was a repeated no-show for scheduled court appearances.
