LIHU‘E — State and county officials are notifying the public that treated effluent mixed with storm water was discharged into the Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor.
The incident occurred last Friday when the Kikiaola ditch was opened to allow storm water to drain into the ocean and prevent flooding from occurring in Waimea, a county news release states.
The public is advised to avoid contact with surface and storm water at the harbor and the adjacent coastal areas. The mixture of storm water, treated wastewater, and brown water may contain harmful microorganisms that can cause illness.
State health officials are monitoring water quality in the area and will issue a media release when the water at the Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor is safe to enter, the release states.
