The University of Hawai‘i made it official Friday, announcing it will be leaving the Western Athletic Conference following the 2011-2012 school year to join up with the Mountain West Conference for football and the Big West for other sports.
The decision ends a 31-year run for UH as a member of the WAC and leaves the conference with just eight schools — only seven with football programs — for the 2012 season.
Hawai‘i had been in talks with the conferences ever since Boise State’s decision to join the MWC set off a domino effect with Nevada and Fresno State also opting to leave the WAC. Athletic Director Jim Donovan made the UH program’s decision official at a news conference Friday.
