Ralph Artaho
Ralph Lanakila Artaho, 89, originally from Koloa, died Nov. 26, 2010 in Waimea, Hawai‘i. He was born in the Philippines, and came to Hawai‘i at a young age, later settling on Kaua‘i. He raised his family here and worked as a ranch hand at Knudsen’s Po‘ipu ranch, then later he worked for the Knudsen family at Kahili Mountain Park, in maintenance, and continued in that position when the Knudsen family sold the property to the Seventh-Day Adventist school (Kahili Adventist School). He later retired from that position.
He is survived by his wife, Emily Artaho of Waimea, Hawai‘i; daughters: Donna Higa of Kalaheo, Enola Gay (Wilbert) Lum of Honolulu, Priscilla (Ralph) Yawata of Waimea, Hawai‘i; Patrice (Randall) Silva of Kalaheo, Ingrid (Latham) Keaweamahi of Anahola, Janell Artaho of ‘Oma‘o; son Ralph (Sandi) Artaho II of Hanapepe; brother Gregorio (Victoria) Artaho of Henderson, Nev.; sister Felicidad (Faye) Perreira of Honolulu; 21 grandchildren: Shane and Lisa Higa, Michelle Shigematsu-Tang, Maile Sawyer, Matthew Lum, Sarah, Ruth and Phillip Yawata, Harry and Kolohe Kapu, Randi-Lee Chism, Keilah Silva, Leah Rapoza, Pili‘aloha Keaweamahi and Latham Keaweamahi Jr., Terence, Joelle, Elmo III and Joseph Tafoya, Cody and Cayden Artaho; 12 great-grandchildren; Kiani Higa, Destiny Shigematsu, Victoria Tang, Kaiya Cruz, Kae‘o Cabato, Emily and Liam Chism, Kainalu Kapu, Nevaeh Arruda-Kapu, Noah and Isaac Wilson, Savannah Miranda; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends are welcome at 9 a.m. for visitation, with a 10 a.m. celebration of life service Dec. 11 at Koloa Missionary Church, with burial to follow at the Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe.

Pedro Duterte Jr.
Pedro “Porkchop” Duterte Jr. of Hanama‘ulu died at his home on Nov. 22, 2010. Born on June 21, 1951 at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, he retired from the state Department of Transportation Airports Division as a heavy-equipment operator, and was an avid fisherman.
He was preceded in death by brother Serafine Duterte and parents Pedro and Loretta (Delostrico) Duterte.
He is survived by wife Cindy (Koerte) Duterte; daughters Tamara Duterte and Jamie Duterte, both of Hanama‘ulu; grandsons Austin and Jai Dabin-Duterte; brothers Lorry (Janel) Duterte, Alan (Vanessa) Duterte, Norman (Sheri) Duterte, Bobby Duterte; sister Jerilynn (Sarge) Agor of California; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Dec. 11, at Immaculate Conception Church, with visitation at 8:30 a.m. and Mass to follow at 10 a.m.

Irene Tupou
Irene Shendrina Momi Tupou of Wailua Homesteads died Nov. 23, 2010, at The Queen’s Medical Center on O‘ahu at age of 53. Born Feb. 21, 1957 on Kaua‘i, she was employed for 19 years with Coco Palms Hotel and worked as a certified nurse aide at Hale ‘Oma‘o Home Health Services, and was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her mother Harriet Kalama-Soares; sister Antoinette “Toni” Arizo; father-in-law Finau Tupou and mother-in-law Seini Tupou.
She is survived by her husband Filipe Tupou of Wailua Homesteads; daughters Crystal (Kirk) Momi Tupou of Lahaina, Maui; and Casey Tupou, Candace (Tyson) Tupou and Cassandra “Ulu” Tupou, all of Wailua Homesteads; grandsons Kaeo Rita-Tupou, Zaedyn Tupou, Tryston “Kala” Tupou, all of Wailua Homesteads; Radyn Yap of Lahaina, Maui; brothers Roger Soares of Wailua Homesteads, Gordon (Darlene) Soares Sr. of Kalaheo and Albert Soares Jr. of Lihu‘e; sister Cindy (Michael) Bandmann Sr. of Kapa‘a; brothers-in-law Samisoni “Soni” (Shana) Tupou of Anahola, ‘Olotesi (Nesi) Tupou of Mu’a, Tonga, Tu’ifua (Seini) Tupou of Ma’ufanga, Tonga; sisters-in-law Laukau (Maselo) Paseka of Lapaha, Tonga, Sitilia (Mosese) Fifita of New Zealand, ‘Ane (Kolomaile) Takataka of Australia, Nita (Piota) Latu of American Samoa, Hulita Tupou of New Zealand, Eviena (Tevita) Fifita of Ma’ufanga, Tonga; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday Dec. 11, 2010, at Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary Chapel, Koloa, with visitation at 10:30 a.m. and service at 11:30 a.m., with cremation to follow and scattering of ashes at a later date.
The family will host a luncheon at Wailua Homesteads Park following services.

Haruji Maeda
Haruji Maeda of Kekaha died Nov. 25, 2010, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at age 78. Born on Feb. 26, 1932, in Waimea, he was an electrician supervisor with Olokele Sugar Co.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kimie Maeda.
He is survived by his sons Wayne Maeda of Kaumakani, Owen (Natalie) Maeda of Kalaheo and Bert Maeda of Honolulu; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, at the Garden Island Mortuary Chapel. Casual attire is suggested.
Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary.
Dr. Gary Blaich
Gary Loomis Blaich, M.D., of Kilauea, died at home on Nov. 25, 2010. Born April 23, 1946 in Honolulu, he worked as a psychiatrist in the state mental-health system, and in private practice on Kaua‘i, for over 30 years. As president of the Kaua‘i Public Land Trust, he helped lead efforts leading to the conservation of over 175 acres of coastal lands.
He was preceded in death by parents Alice and Norman Blaich; sister Diane Anderson, and brother-in-law Cliff Bailey.
Dr. Blaich is survived by his wife of 42 years, Beryl; daughters Mehana (Kilipaki) Vaughan and Meleana (Will) Estes; grandchildren Pikomanawakupono and Pi‘ina‘emalina, mother-in-law Amelia (Jim Beatty) Bailey, brothers and sisters in law Don Anderson, Jim, Fahy, Speedy (Pauline), and John (Karla) Bailey, nieces Britten, Lindsey and Brooke (Johnny) Bailey, Nicole (Bobby) Galchutt, and nephews Camm (Janene) Willener, Kaulana Bailey and Michael Coots.
A memorial celebration will be held on Saturday, Dec. 11 at his family home at 2868 F Kalihiwai Rd. (on the dirt road to Kauape‘a Beach) at 11 a.m., with visitation from 9:30 a.m. Carpooling is recommended. Look for parking signs and a shuttle.
In lieu of wreaths, the family welcomes lei and donations to Gary’s favorite charities: the Kaua‘i Public Land Trust, Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank and the Honolulu Art Academy.
