LIHU‘E — University of Hawai‘i men’s basketball coach Gib Arnold announced changes to this year’s roster Wednesday with the addition of one guard and the loss of two others.
Local product Jeremiah Ostrowski, a slot receiver on the Warrior football team and a former all-state basketball player at Punahou School, has joined the UH backcourt. The 5-9, 175-pound Ostrowski, has two years of eligibility as a dual-sport athlete.
“Miah will be joining us full-time on the court following the Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl,” Arnold said. “We’re excited to have him join us and we welcome the winning attitude and toughness he brings after being part of our 2010 WAC champion football team.”
A multi-sport athlete at Punahou, Ostrowski earned a reputation as one of the state’s finest basketball players. A four-time all-state first-team selection, he led Punahou to a league title and state runner-up finish as a senior.
Ostrowski turned down several basketball offers before accepting a football scholarship at UH. After redshirting in 2008, he has appeared in nine games as a reserve slot receiver the last two seasons. He has recorded two catches for 22 yards in eight games of action this season.
Meanwhile, Arnold also announced that guards Jordan Coleman and Anthony Salter have opted to leave the program.
“Jordan and Anthony have chosen to leave the team and pursue other schools where they will have the possibility of more playing time,” Arnold said. “We appreciate their efforts and wish them all the best.”
Coleman, a true freshman, appeared briefly in two games this season. In his most extensive action this year, the 6-4, 175 guard from North Hollywood, Calif., tallied two rebounds, an assist and a block against Central Arkansas on Nov. 24.
He was named a first-team All-California Interscholastic Federation member in 3A and league Most Valuable Player, as well as Player of the Year by the Ventura County Coaches Association as a senior.
Salter, a native of Tallahassee, Fla., appeared in all five home games prior to UH’s first road trip of the season. Hampered by a foot injury in the preseason, the 5-11, 175-pound junior totaled seven points and three assists in 31 minutes of action, including a season-high 16 minutes played in the season-opener against Montana State.
The Warriors (5-2) will be back on the court Saturday when Hawai‘i Pacific University comes to Manoa for a 7 p.m. tip at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Hawai‘i will then take on Chicago State, playing that contest on Maui at 7 p.m. on Dec. 17.
The Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic then runs at the SSC from Dec. 22-25. Four games will be played each day on Dec. 22, 23 and 25.
UH will play the final game of the opening day at 8 p.m. against Florida State.
