KAPA‘A — The U.S. Army recently bestowed Col. Jerald Knudsen with the Outstanding Civilian Service Award.
Major General Arthur Bartell presented the award, the Army’s third highest honor, to recognize Knudsen for his outstanding performance while serving as senior army instructor for the U.S. Army Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps from July 1994 to June 2010 when he retired as the director of the Kapa‘a High School program.
“He has fostered an environment that promotes and sustains a driving pursuit of excellence and achievement,” Bartell said. “Col. Knudsen’s commitment to the Junior ROTC program reflects great credit on himself, Cadet Command and the United States Army.”
During his tenure at Kapa‘a High School, Knudsen also served as a Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation air riflery coach and spearheaded numerous events where the school’s Junior ROTC unit was involved, including the Department of Water’s SPLASH education program where the cadets not only set up the event for the estimated 500 grade-specific students but also served as on-site volunteers, including being instructors.
Bartell, in the certificate, recognized Knudsen’s contribution to the entire community, the County of Kaua‘i, and the State of Hawai‘i “by his influence and skills as a visionary manager and organizer.”
