Irene Tupou
Irene Shendrina Momi Tupou of Wailua Homesteads died Nov. 23, 2010, at The Queen’s Medical Center on O‘ahu at age of 53. Born Feb. 21, 1957 on Kaua‘i, she was employed for 19 years with Coco Palms Hotel and worked as a certified nurse aide at Hale ‘Oma‘o Home Health Services, and was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her mother Harriet Kalama-Soares; sister Antoinette “Toni” Arizo; father-in-law Finau Tupou and mother-in-law Seini Tupou.
She is survived by her husband Filipe Tupou of Wailua Homesteads; daughters Crystal (Kirk) Momi Tupou of Lahaina, Maui; and Casey Tupou, Candace (Tyson) Tupou and Cassandra “Ulu” Tupou, all of Wailua Homesteads; grandsons Kaeo Rita-Tupou, Zaedyn Tupou, Tryston “Kala” Tupou, all of Wailua Homesteads; Radyn Yap of Lahaina, Maui; brothers Roger Soares of Wailua Homesteads, Gordon (Darlene) Soares Sr. of Kalaheo and Albert Soares Jr. of Lihu‘e; sister Cindy (Michael) Bandmann Sr. of Kapa‘a; brothers-in-law Samisoni “Soni” (Shana) Tupou of Anahola, ‘Olotesi (Nesi) Tupou of Mu’a, Tonga, Tu’ifua (Seini) Tupou of Ma’ufanga, Tonga; sisters-in-law Laukau (Maselo) Paseka of Lapaha, Tonga, Sitilia (Mosese) Fifita of New Zealand, ‘Ane (Kolomaile) Takataka of Australia, Nita (Piota) Latu of American Samoa, Hulita Tupou of New Zealand, Eviena (Tevita) Fifita of Ma’ufanga, Tonga; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday Dec. 11, 2010, at Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary Chapel, Koloa, with visitation at 10:30 a.m. and service at 11:30 a.m., with cremation to follow and scattering of ashes at a later date.
The family will host a luncheon at Wailua Homesteads Park following services.

Elfreida Hamano
Elfreida Hamano of Koloa died on her 94th birthday on Nov. 21, 2010 at Hale Kupuna Heritage Home in ‘Oma‘o. Born Nov. 21, 1916 in Koloa, she retired from the state Department of Education.
She was preceded in death by husband John Hamano.
She is survived by daughters Lynette (Carlos) Buhk of Koloa and Helen (Joel) Morris of Santa Rosa, Calif.; grandchildren Ryan (Monica) Buhk of Koloa, Laina (Jake) Maniscalco of Sunnyvale, Calif.; John (Denise) Morris of Alameda, Calif.; Jay (Adriana) Morris of Oakland, Calif.; Joellyn Morris of San Francisco, Calif.; great-grandchildren Nicholas and Jordan Fregosi, Kendall, Kaleinani and Makena Buhk and Giselle and Julian Morris; sisters-in-law Kunie Kiyabu and Harue Chinen; brother-in-law William Sasaki; niece Elethia Okuno; hanai family Don and Trudy Schoenfeld; many nieces and nephews.

Mitsue Miwa
Mitsue Miwa of Wailua died on Aug. 11, 2010 at the age of 93. She was born on Nov. 24, 1916 in Kekaha.
She is survived by her husband Shinji Miwa; daughters Marilyn Miwa and Judith Stambaugh; granddaughter Lisa (Eric) Gordon; two great-grandchildren, Madison and Chase Gordon; brother Motomu Togioka and sister Hissako Ueno.
Private services were held.
Gary Blaich
Gary Loomis Blaich, M.D. of Kilauea, died at home on Nov. 25, 2010. Born April 23, 1946 in Honolulu, he worked as a psychiatrist in the state mental-health system, and in private practice on Kaua‘i, for over 30 years. As president of the Kaua‘i Public Land Trust, he led the trust in conservation of over 175 acres of coastal lands on the island.
He was preceded in death by parents Alice and Norman Blaich, sister Diane Anderson and brother-in-law Cliff Bailey.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Beryl; daughters Mehana (Kilipaki) Vaughan and Meleana (Will) Estes; grandchildren, Pikomanawakupono and Pi‘ina‘emalina; mother-in-law Amelia (Jim Beatty) Bailey; brothers- and sisters-in-law Don Anderson and Jim, Fahy, Speedy (Pauline) and John (Karla) Bailey; nieces Britten, Lindsey and Brooke (Johnny) Bailey and Nicole (Bobby) Galchutt; and nephews Camm (Janene) Willener, Kaulana Bailey and Michael Coots.
A memorial celebration will be held on Saturday, Dec. 11 at 11 a.m., with visitation from 9:30 a.m., at a location to be named later.
In lieu of wreaths, the family welcomes lei and donations to Gary’s favorite charities: the Kaua‘i Public Land Trust, the Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank and the Honolulu Art Academy.
Emilie Batangan
Emilie Batangan of Honolulu died Nov. 27, 2010 at the age of 52. She was born in Lihu‘e on Oct. 24, 1958 and was a medical technologist at Castle Medical Center.
She is survived by her parents Epifanio and Christina Batangan of Lihu‘e; brothers Edwin Batangan of California and Reuben (Lyla Eldrege) Batangan of Maui; sister Elsie (Glenn Perry) Batangan of Honolulu; five nephews, one niece, numerous aunties, uncles and cousins.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010 at Immaculate Conception Church in Kapaia, with visitation from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. and Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens.

Eteru Pili Jr.
Eteru Pili Jr. of Hanama‘ulu and Waipahu, O‘ahu, died Nov. 23, 2010 at his residence at the age of 72. Born on Dec. 22, 1937 in Utulei, American Samoa, he was an estimator for Aloha International Moving Services.
He was preceded in death by parents Eteru and Lafaaua Pili Sr.; sister Lafaaua “Titi” Ulfale; and brothers Teetai, Ane, and Olasa “Pea” Pili.
He is survived by wife Sandra Pili; sons Gilbert “Butch” Pili, Adam (Lisa) Pili, Craig Pili, Darrell “Cotty” (Sophie) Pili, Leslie “Quentin” Pili, Anthony “Tony” Pili; daughters Jordan Pili and Debra Pili; sister Martha “Mafa” (Pasi) Iafeta of O‘ahu; brothers Vasenga (Lavern) Pili of O‘ahu, David (Leatrice) Pili of O‘ahu, Tolopa “Toi” (Cassie) Pili of California, Fouvale Lutu of O‘ahu; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Shizue “Elaine” Kouchi died on Nov. 11, 2010 in Honolulu at the age of 85. She was born Oct. 11, 1925 in Waimea.
She was preceded in death by parents Hiroshi and Takeyo Kouchi; sisters Eleanor Muranaka, Alice Farrar and Margaret Takatsuki; brother Jiro Kouchi; and brother-in-law Henry Takatsuki.
She is survived by sister Nancy (Masao) Heyada; brother Edward (Tessie) Kouchi; numerous nieces and nephews.
Private services were held on Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010 at the West Kaua‘i Hongwanji.

Gregory Richard Lund of Hanalei died at Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital on Nov. 26, 2010 at the age of 52. He was born in California on April 2, 1958 and was the owner of Lund Professional Painting.
He is survived by two daughters, Heidi Lund of Maryland and Holly Lund of Arizona; parents Richard and Bettye Lund of California; brother David (Nicole) Lund of California; one granddaughter, Emma Reese Lund of Maryland; two nephews, Griffin and Kyle Lund of California.
A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, Dec. 12 at the Amazing Grace Church at Hanalei Elementary School beginning at 9:30 a.m., with scattering of cremains with a paddle-out at 11 a.m. at Pine Trees.
