Three University of Hawai‘i softball players were named National Fastpitch Coaches Association Scholar-Athletes for the 2010 season. Alexandra Aguirre, Jori Jasper, and Kelly Majam all were selected for their exceptional work in the classroom.
Only 19 Rainbow Wahine softball players have ever earned the prestigious honor since the award was established by the NFCA in 1998. To qualify, individuals must maintain a cumulative 3.50 GPA or higher for the fall and spring semesters combined.
Just eight players from Hawai‘i have earned the award more than once, including Aguirre and Majam who both earned the honor last season.
Jasper is a redshirt freshman first baseman from Lihu‘e, majoring in pre-business and plans to apply to the Schidler School of Business in the Spring of 2011.
A 2009 graduate of Kaua‘i High School, Jasper is also involved with the NCAA’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and is a second-year senator with the Associated Students of the University of Hawai‘i, the school’s undergraduate student government.
Jori’s older brother, Jett, is also a Kaua‘i High graduate and a wide receiver on the 25th-ranked Hawai‘i Warriors football team.
Aguirre, a junior outfielder from Temple City, Calif., is an English major. She started in 62-of-64 games as a sophomore in 2010 and finished the season batting .311 with 13 home runs. Aguirre has also received Academic All-WAC honors both as a freshman and a sophomore.
Majam is a secondary education major who was a redshirt freshman last year that got the job done on the field and in the classroom. She set numerous records on the field earning second team NFCA All-American honors.
The center fielder from Pine Valley, Calif. led the NCAA with 30 home runs in 2010 and broke the UH single-season records for runs scored (88) and walks (44).
She led UH in batting average (.400), runs scored (81), triples (tied with Kanani Pu‘u-Warren with two), home runs (30), RBIs (60 – tied with Melissa Gonzalez), on-base percentage (.519), slugging percentage (.919), and walks (44).
It is her second NFCA scholar-athlete award in her career. She also earned Academic All-WAC honors last year.
