PO‘IPU — A family who had never been to Kukui‘ula Shopping Village took advantage of the inaugural free holiday movie under the stars to get acquainted with the Po‘ipu center, Saturday.
Veronica Lovesy of Kukui‘ula Shopping Village said the center will offer a collection of holiday events from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. The free holiday movie event Saturday launched the campaign.
“We just got the chairs in on Wednesday,” Lovesy said. “People can enjoy the lawn seating or we have mats so they can simply lie down on the grassy area.”
Lovesy said the popular holiday decorated shopping bags and food drive is back this year. Koloa Elementary School and Kalaheo Elementary School students decorated 1,500 shopping bags which can be used as gift wraps this holiday season.
The bags, some being shown Saturday by the Kalaheo School Drama Club, are available for a donation of $1 per bag with the proceeds going back to the schools.
Kukui‘ula Village is also conducting a non-perishable food drive at participating merchants where shoppers bringing in a food donation will receive free Market Money which can be used during the Wednesday Farmers Market at the shopping center. Each donation earns a dollar in Market Money that can be spent at the 20 vendors.
Coming on the heels of the successful Farmers Market, Kukui‘ula Village will launch a weekly Art Walk each Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m.
Patrons can purchase a commemorative wine glass for $5 with the proceeds benefiting local art programs.
Patrons can also stop by participating art galleries who will be hosting wine tastings and have artists on hand to speak with guests.
Live music will be featured and Living Foods Market and Cafe will host a formal wine tasting as well.
Under the holiday movie night program, Lovesy encourages movie-goers to arrive early so they can select their seats, grab some food and enjoy the movie which starts at 6:30 p.m.
Saturday’s movie, “Miracle on 34th Street,” benefited the Kalaheo School Drama Club.
Some of the concession workers came in from The Kaua‘i Christmas Parade held that afternoon in Lihu‘e where they participated as singers for the school’s Sunshine Express.
The Dec. 4 movie, “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” will benefit the Kalaheo School Sunshine Express, which is currently working to raise funds to help defray the expense of its upcoming three-concert series on O‘ahu starting Dec. 11.
“Scrooged” with Bill Murray is the feature for Dec. 11, and “Elf” with Will Ferrell is the Dec. 18 feature, which will benefit the Koloa School fourth-grade class, Lovesy said.
“Home Alone” with Macaulay Culkin and Joe Pesci is the feature for Christmas Day, and “Serendipity” with John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale is the New Year’s Day feature, both films benefiting the Hawai‘i Children’s Theater.
